Tasty, but not quite great

Bought a bottle of Frigate Reserve 12y for $33. Bottle and label design looks very nice and unique. Amber mahogany color. Plenty of oak and burnt sugar with mild vanilla to your nose and palate when neat sipped. Surprisingly similar to the 8y equivalent with a very slight leg up. Strong and dry burn at the end. Definitely much better when mixed with your favorite soda.

My separate review from the 15 year 6 out of 10

I did a lazy two for one review between the 15 year and 12 year, mainly because such a comparison is absolutely essential to judging rum from this fairly new company. I would not hesitate to buy their 15 year old again at $48 as it is among the top five value rums costing more than $45 US. This 12 year old at $33 US is not bad at all, but is best used for avoiding dipping into the very expensive part of one's collection after a few tastings. By all means add spring water to this one to bring out the flavors and lower the burn.
Update only a few hour later: Sorry, but Don Q Anejo serves as a much tastier and cheaper alternative to avoid dipping into one' s expensive collection. I have no other choice except to drop this rum down from my initial rating of 7 to a 6. Sorry!
