A group of investors from Abaco and Walker's Cay in the Bahamas hooked up with the legendary Don Pancho in Panama. They now have access to his casks and their 21 year old was their first creation. Their bottles were inspired by one that washed up on Abaco's beaches and was dated back to the 1600's. With this tremendous amount of effort for them to produce their definitive rum from the casks of a living rum legend, I could do no wrong in trying a few bottles.
Their 21 year old goes for $110, their 15 year old goes for $48, their 12 year old goes for $33, and their 8 year old goes for $27. I carefully chose the 15 year old and 12 year old for starters. I made great efforts to get my hands on two of these! See the enclosed photo of both. The 15 year is slightly darker, but is not quite easy to tell the difference in the photo. Their website says that some people can tell these two apart. I am so glad to be among those some people!
Their goal was to produce one of the smoothest tasting rums ever and to that end, they have succeeded tremendously. The nose on both is of caramel with no acetone or burn. The taste on both is smooth, but the 12 year old has some burn. The awesome finish on the 15 year old is where it shines. I rate this one as a high 8 and the 12 year old as a mid 7.5. The 15 year old definitely warrants repeat purchases! When compared side by side to their 21 year old much later, this 15 year old is definitely their best buy!
Sometimes where your at influences your opinion of a rum. This was a good dinner by the ocean in the Keys of Florida. Rum had a bit of a bite at first, but i enjoyed the flavors. Not too sweet, just right. I’ll buy this again.
Bought a bottle of Frigate Reserve 15y for $46. Had a back-to-back-to-back testing between Frigate 8y, 12y and 15y. Bottle and label design looks very nice and unique. Amber mahogany color. 15y is clearly the smoothest of these three. Plenty of oak and caramel with mild vanilla to your nose and palate when neat sipped. Surprisingly still a burn at the end, but much smoother than the 8y or the 12y.
