Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
When I drink rums, I drink them neat so I can get the full flavor. This was a solid sipper. It does have a little burn on the end but it’s not overbearing. Notes of molasses and lightly spiced. The nose is very welcoming. Great with a cigar or sharing with friends.
Rum is my favorite drink, I basically only drink Rum, and I have tasted most of the available ones found in my country, from straight sippers (my first choice) to "ethanol" based cocktail cheapos. Being on a low income I relay on offers to get the good stuff, and Brugal 1888 Gran Reserve, either on offer or not is to my taste one of the best ever. Definitley not comparable to Guyana Plantation, or the high end Cubaney or Zacapas, but unbeatable for its price. Even if traditionalists think Im nuts, I love to drink it with a squeeze of lime, and during hot summer days even an ice cube.
Over all I give it an 8 out 10. It goes down like water with a very short afterburn and you feel the alchool kicking in after just a couple of drinks. I highly recommend not getting drunk thou, as it can be a strong and unpleasant experience, but two to three drinks will be more than enough making you feel just right.
A great product.
A bit too dry for me with an oak taste and just a tad of sweetness.
The taste doesn't last long and the aroma doesn't convince me.
Voňavý a jemný; rozhodně žádná kořalka pro piráty, čemuž odpovídá i cena. Spíš to připomíná koňak. Hezky to voní (po hrozinkách, tabáku a kůži) a ještě líp chutná (navíc perník a svatojánský chléb) a přitom to není zbytečně přeslazené.
I když, jak praví klasik - never say never again...
Overall not bad, especially as a sipper. Seems the longer it has a chance to sit, the more the aroma and flavors mature. I only discovered this by accident as I had forgotten about my drink for almost an hour and found it much better across the board.
Sort of like a rum, bourbon, sherry cocktail. Not unpleasant but somewhat confusing. The alcohol hides some, than finishes with a light burn. It is different enough to own a bottle but it would not be my only one.
Nose: strong, pleasant, toffee, oak, and some smoke.
Palate: rather sharp and thin taste, no volume, does not last long.
6,5 - 7
A rather dark rum. Very nice bottle presentation. Quite fragrant - I let it sit for a while and can smell thre aroma. Fairly smooth, with an average finish. Doesn't last too long on the tongue. Overall not bad, but not that memorable either.
Found this one tastes sweeter than the previous Brugal 1888 (old bottle) and disappointing. Wish the old one was still avaible.
Sipping this neat, I must admit, the first few tastes of this Rum I was not overly impressed. I have now finished about a quarter of the bottle and the taste is much better now ( I have discovered this with a few other Rums too). Now I love this stuff, very smooth and a wonderful depth of flavour, with hints of Molasses, Vanilla and Chocolate, and a very pleasant afterburn. I very was tempted to give it a 9.
Not that strong in flavour but nice on the palate. Standard level sipping rum. Good but not great
Smagt til romhattens romfestival 2019. Den får en 7'er.
Having tried and rated a bottle of 1888 Ron Gran Reserva Familiar I saw this one as a new product at my local store and thought I would try it. After looking it up on their website I think this is the new standard 1888 since the old bottle is not listed. It says aged up to 14 years and double aged in bourbon and sherry casks. The aroma is very subtle and inviting. The flavor is very heavy with molasses and is quite smooth. It reminds me a great deal of Papa’s Pilar 24. Overall a nice offering if you like sweetened rum, it not too complex but a very good choice for $40.
