I finally came across a bottle of this Ron Centenario 12 Year Old this morning. When I got home, it was time to compare it to my Ron Centenario 7 Year Old that I rated as a 6 some time ago. This 12 Year Old is only marginally better than the 7 Year Old, but when cost is considered, is this 12 Year Old worth double the price? I think not. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good dry rum with enough complex flavors to warrant sipping. However, since there are better rums for less money, I will only buy it again if I happen to run across it at a good price. I almost put the 20 Year Old into my buggy for purchase, but am so glad that I put it back.

Update October 2, 2018: I found this one again at a nearby liquor store for only $34, which now makes it a good buy. After being burned by it's sugar bomb older brother RC 20 that has 40 gpl of added sugar, I had to give this one another try. Nowhere is this listed, but it definitely has 0 gpl of added sugar, making it a dry rum. If it is transparent with no viscosity or legs, then it has no added sugar. Plain and simple!!!!

Avast, mates! This rum comes on all big an' lusty. On the nose she be sweet, but not so much, with a shipload of caramel and a bit of oak. She be spicy, but fetch me up for daft, I cannot make out which they be. Unless I am mistook, there also be some kind of... fruit? hidin' below deck. On the tongue, the caramel vanishes, and in her place, the spices jump your tongue. This rum be a spicy wench who makes herself known loud and clear. There be a hint of oak, but not so much to notice, and there be a nuttiness about her that makes her more savory. What's nut to love about that? She be smooth, but there be a slight burn goin' down the hatch AND under my tongue - which be weird because that be also where I keep me extra sword. Might this be a good sippin' rum? Well... curse me for a lubber, but I had the good fortune to have had a seven year old and a twelve year old at the same time, and of the two, the five year old be a wee bit sweeter, but lighter in body, while the twelve year old be a wee bit dryer, but smoother and richer with far more body. May I sink and perish in blood, but they both be about the same to this captain. I would gladly have either, but if money be no object, I would recommend the twenty-five year old. Now SHE be a rum who knows her trade. Arrrgh!

Tasted at Laka Lono on 6/4/23. Pours a dark gold color. Caramel toffee aroma. Big marshmallow and butterscotch flavors. Very smooth. Vanilla. Cardemom and a slight coriander finish.

Tasted at Laka Lono Sunday, June 4 2023. 2/3 of Steph Centenario flight
Color: true amber
Aroma: fruity, caramel agedness
Flavor: not as sweet as the 7. Flavor continues on quite a while, I'd prefer this in a tiki drink or as a sipper in the winter by the fire with melted cheese. May be an essence of cloves.
If this was consumed in a stadium cup on ice, it would be with Dr Pepper

Great Tico product! Oak, vanilla, caramel, and velvety on the palate. Definitely recommend at this price point.

A smooth and fruity everyday drinking rum/sipping rum. Very light on the palate with a bit of sweet and tart fruit that finishes sweet and dry. I think it’s worth having a bottle on hand to crack open for literally any occasion.

This is a great rum for pineapple drinks. I love all the Ron Centenaro products.

Much simpler and more rustic than the 20-year sibling. Overall, however, with a pleasing wood note. Not a high standard but also not a bad rum.

I’m in Costa Rica for the first time, stopped by the local supermarket and ran across the Ron Centenario 12 for like $35.
Makes a very good mixer but when neat, it’s surprisingly smooth, and surprisingly Sweet. Not a lot of complexity but very drinkable. I’ll probably look for the 20 year in duty free for my trip home
