Beautiful caramel color and a light aroma of charred oak and apple pie. Poured neat, it warms the tongue and leaves behind a hint of sweetness and and a flavor that I can only call "pure rum". Some purists may scoff at the added sweetness, but I found it to be well balanced, and easy to drink.

I found this rum on a recent trip to Jacksonville and decided to mark one off my wish list.

Now I wish I hadn't bothered.

Apparently my opinion will be going against the grain here but this rum would be great if they hadn't sugared it so much.

Am I drinking rum or molasses with alcohol added?

This could almost be pancake syrup.

The syrupy sweetness is so overwhelming that it hides some elements and flavor profiles that would have made for a great rum.

But someone decided to ruin what could've been a great rum.

Forshame!

Paid way too much for this. Sad. My fault.

I forced myself to try to take extra sips and finally found some vanilla and toffee undertones to it along with some oak tannin. Even a hint of banana.

Beyond that, there's not much.

I read so many praises for this rum. Makes me wonder if I got a counterfeit because what I got sure ain't what others describe. Don't get me wrong...there are some sugared rums that I actually like but this one goes overboard. I cannot recommend it as a sipping rum unless you're into drinking syrup. I could see this being effectively used in drinks with an antithesis of sweetness such as coffee drinks or drinks using more bitters than the average. Any other suggestions? I cannot see this used in fruit-based drinks. The sugariness would be completely off the charts. And not in a good way.

My recommendation? Not worth the $65-70 price. Many better rums for half that.

Best rum I've ever had. So smooth and perfect to drink on the rocks.

This is exactly my "blood type" - in short, dry rum with natural sweetness and refined taste but let's take this step by step.
Ron Cartavio XO is a blend of rums matured for 10-30 years (with 18 years being the average) in American, Slovenian, and French oak casks, which previously contained sherry and bourbon whiskey.
The color is quite dark for a rum without additives.
The aroma of this rum straight-up reminded me of Cubaney 18. It is smooth and refined. There is tons of vanilla and caramel, as well as some citruses and it is quite sweet. For a further comparison with Cubaney, I think that one is slightly better in this regard and less sweet. With that said, the aroma is well-rounded and full of sweetness.
Now the most important part - the taste. Well, it is amazing. It is a dry rum in nature but still provides some natural sweetness. The flavors are refined, with very little alcohol burn. There is vanilla, caramel, and dark chocolate (really nice). It has an interesting subtle sweetness to it.
Overall, this is 9/10 for me. It could be 10/10 as well, but I'm reserving that for something that will be truly special. On the other hand, if I'd be taking performance/cost into consideration, it would end at 8/10, as it is overall similar to the aforementioned Cubaney, which is about half the price of this bottle. All in all - 9/10 is a fair rating.

I take this after letting it breathe about 45 minutes. It's domestic production where i live, so for about $40 a bottle it's incredible stuff. Wonderful burgundy-mahogany colour and overall presentation (box and bottle). Definitely sweet, great sipper. I've served this to friends who wouldn't even think of sipping rum and they loved it.

It was a very pleasant surprise. Smooth and a little bit sweet. Very close in quality and flavor to another excellent peruvian rum, Millonarios XO, but less expensive and easier to get in the US.

Mahogany color in the glass.
A bit restrained on the nose. Delicate wood notes and candied fruit are accompanied by leather and medicine herbs. Caramel, chocolate and a bit of clove are muddled with the whole.
On the palate bitter-sweet with an independent character. An aromatic blend like Millonario and Arcane together. Tart medicinal herbs coated with caramel, dried fruit drizzled with almond bittersweet, chocolate with marzipan center.
A bit bumpy and bulky on the finish. Chocolate and fruit linger on the tongue with a honey sweetness for a long time, something bitter remains.
A rum that lacks something the edges and edges but still very peculiar comes along, like a Solera. For sweet drinkers and lovers of this style. -8
Should be the finale of my annual rum round, but is now set as a dessert rum after dinner.

Such a good sipper. So much balance between notes of fruit, caramel, vanilla, and dashes of toffee, chocolate and nuts. It's just so good and elegant. Truly a pleasure to sip.

...not the most famous, but worth a try.

I wished me the bottle for Christmas 2020, to have at least something to celebrate this "great" year ***Irony Off***

Well, at first it smelled more alcoholic than expected...so let it stay a while to let the Esters go...

It sticks to the glass and the color is deep.

The taste is good, not too sweet and aromatic. Read the other reviews to get the ingredients table ;)

It is a solid rum, a good 8...not less no more...

The taste and smell is almost like Zacapa Solera 23.
Vanilla, chocolate and oak but with a little bitterness on the end.
Needs time to breathe., will taste better after 10 minutes !
