I found this rum on a recent trip to Jacksonville and decided to mark one off my wish list.

Now I wish I hadn't bothered.

Apparently my opinion will be going against the grain here but this rum would be great if they hadn't sugared it so much.

Am I drinking rum or molasses with alcohol added?

This could almost be pancake syrup.

The syrupy sweetness is so overwhelming that it hides some elements and flavor profiles that would have made for a great rum.

But someone decided to ruin what could've been a great rum.

Forshame!

Paid way too much for this. Sad. My fault.

I forced myself to try to take extra sips and finally found some vanilla and toffee undertones to it along with some oak tannin. Even a hint of banana.

Beyond that, there's not much.

I read so many praises for this rum. Makes me wonder if I got a counterfeit because what I got sure ain't what others describe. Don't get me wrong...there are some sugared rums that I actually like but this one goes overboard. I cannot recommend it as a sipping rum unless you're into drinking syrup. I could see this being effectively used in drinks with an antithesis of sweetness such as coffee drinks or drinks using more bitters than the average. Any other suggestions? I cannot see this used in fruit-based drinks. The sugariness would be completely off the charts. And not in a good way.

My recommendation? Not worth the $65-70 price. Many better rums for half that.

I got a bottle from Peru with no prior warning. I opened and knew it was special. I didnt think I'd find anything to sway me from my opinion that Diplomatico Exclusiva was the best I'd tasted. One ice cube or neat does the trick. Deep developing flavours to savour. Its truly special.
Can't recommend Cartavio XO too highly. Working out how to get another bottle is the hard part. Not available in Australia.

Nice looking bottle with a wooden cork.
Color is deep copper. Taste it's very smooth and elegant. Vanilla some brown sugar and toffee. Maybe a little bit to sweet but it doesn't really matter because drinking this delicious rum it's like winning a freaking Oscar.

Very smooth initial taste with heavy butterscotch. Finishes with molasses and just an ever so hint of tobacco.

Color and consistency are outstanding. Definitely a sipping rum, and a really good one at that. Let it open up and you wont be disappointed.

this is a sipping rum, it would be sacrilege to mix.
nose first hints of alcohol followed by vanilla and toffee
on the palette toffee, vanilla with a slight but pleasurable warming sensation, leading into toffee, cinnamon and tobacco and long lasting vanilla molasses tobacco leaving you wanting more

after letting it rest for 5 minutes on an large ice cube the alcohol warmth lost a bit of its warming quality either way with or without is very pleasant
cant see to many being disappointed with this nectar

This rum has a striking mahogany color, with an exquisite flavor that has added slightly vanilla, and with a deep sweet smell. The good thing (at least for me) is that in my country i can get it for up to $ 30 a bottle.

100% recomendado.
