About 5 to 10 years ago, I found a bottle of this rum in the old teardrop shape. Thinking that the liquor store would soon get more than just that one bottle, I did similar to what Tomy from Romania suggested years later with his bottle of the same shape. Yes, it was so smooth that I almost consumed it in one day like he said could easily happen, but it actually took two days for this fool to down. At that time, I liked it better than Eldorado 12, which is now my third rated rum. My top two were only found recently thanks to this website.

When I got my new bottle home, I was actually afraid to open it for quite a while. Did Zacapa change the formula? Was it totally different than what I remembered? I cautiously poured a snifter and let it breathe for about twenty minutes. The aroma is of alcohol and caramel. On the tongue, it is a slightly peppered burn with caramel. Going down the pipe is nothing nasty, but nothing memorable. This new version cannot even make it into my top ten thanks to the parent company Zacapa.

When I read many of the other reviews before trying to find it, I was wondering if this is the same rum that I remembered. Unfortunately, it is not! This bottle was also about $10 cheaper than that old bottle, which should have tipped me off right away. I just had to solve the mystery. It's tough being tenacious.

After letting the new bottle with only one snifter removed sit for a few hours, I poured another snifter and let it breathe for a while outside on a breezy day. The burn was gone. However it smelled almost like nothing and tasted almost like flavored water. Flavors going down the pipe are minimal. So once the burn is allowed to breathe off, there is really nothing there to encourage me from buying another bottle. Nothing offensive, but nothing to get excited about either. I would suggest this one to lovers of Don Q Gran Anejo since they are similar.

Classic brown rum with pastry notes, almonds and fruity flavors. The oak is more present and vanilla.

When I opened the bottle it seemed sweet and smooth to me. Today I can clearly smell spices and strong alcohol. Slightly sweet.
Is it the same Botran 18 like on Your website?

Vůně lehce lak, dřevitá, pečené citrusové ovoce, mírně lihová, koření
Chuť sladká, dřevitá, koření, čokoláda, jednodušší
Dochuť tabák, whisky, kratší
Voní o něco lépe, než chutná
6,7/10

I bought this at an airport as the selection was poor, and it was one of the few ones I hadn't tried yet.

I'm not gonna delve too deep into this. It's a fine rum, with some sweetness, fruitiness and what you expect from a rum. The bourbon, sherry and port comes through a bit much here for my taste, as I can't help but feel it tastes like rum mixed with something else. It's certainly not a bad product, but also one that doesn't make me want to go back to it, given other options are available.

It should also be noted my bottle was shaped differently, as it was the short and wide version like the Oak Rare Blend, though from clear glass and with the "18" in the middle. It isn't listed here, but I assume this is the same content, just different bottle.

Pred časom som skúšal 15-ročnú soleru tejto značky, jednalo sa o pomerne chutný, dobre vyvážený suchší rum. 18-ročnú soleru som dostal darom, a to hneď v litrovej fľaši. Má jednoduchý tvar, no už s hodnotnejšie vyzerajúcou etiketou. Vôňa je nenápadná, no veľmi príjemná, so silnými dubovými, vanilkovými a karamelovými tónmi. No s vyšším príplatkom, i keď zrovna v litrovom balení vychádza celkom výhodne (sedmička stojí cez 35€). Subjektívny rating silných 7.

Todays tasting is the BOTRAN 18 years solera from Guatemala, made from virgin sugar cane sirup. Unknown are the individual age groups of the rums and their rates.
No sugar added and the full 40 % that is written on the bottle are really inside.
Nose : raisins, vanilla, spicy wood. In the back a little toffee and chocolate. Everything is harmonious, aromatic, soft and pleasant.
Palate : sweet vanilla, fresh grapes and also raisins paired with a slight sharpness. A little pear and oak, despite its slight sharpness, the alcohol is well integrated. Nothing special at all, but a very successful and tasty rum for roiund 30 Euro.
Finish : long. With all the impressions from the palate. What remains is a great vanilla taste with a little more oak, than from the palate. The sharpness disappears quickly.

Conclusion : a tasty rum without frills but with a good value for money. For advanced learner but also for first-timer user, who wants to have a honest not sweetened rum in the jungle of all the sugared spirits.
My rating is not a full 8, but between 7.5 and 8. Enjoy it !
