Abuelo Gran Reserva 12-Year

This is indeed a tasty, sweet rum. Subtle sweet aroma in the bottle. The flavor is not bad but there is some flavor in their that I don't really care for. That's the main reason why I didn't give it an "8". The aftertaste (post burn) is better. I just cannot put my finger on what that odd flavor it. Oh well. Otherwise a very nice rum.

This is a keeper! A really nice Spanish style rum that delivers a good mix of sweetness and fruity and spicy flavours. Maybe not as good as Zacapa, but I would put it on equal footing with say Reserva Diplomatico Exclusiva, which has a similar taste profile.

A great complex aroma in the glass which you expect with rum's that are a bit older and in a higher price range then this one.
I really like the taste of it and it's very smooth.
The after taste is also very nice.

Nothing wrong with this rum, but nothing special either. I'm not tasting anything memorable like the woodsy oak in the Pampero or the more complex finish in the Barcelo. I'm sure I'll enjoy the bottle just not sure I'm making Abuelo a go to.

Taste is good, a little to sweet for me. Similar to Zacapan but with more oak taste.

Why unexpected? Was for some reason not too sure what to think, it initially had a cheaper alcoholic whiff which burnt off quick. Very shortly afterwards I realized that I need to keep a bottle of this around, like a Ron Barrilito or a Diplomatico Reserve Exlusiva. Has a really nice unique flavor; wood, sweet chocolate and some vanilla. Wouldn't dare mix this, would through a bottle of Zaya instead to save it!

first tried abuelo 7 and did not like its thin taste and fany sweetness. 12 is a different story, very fruitfull smell, yet you know you are drinking rum. Seems somehow filimial to Barcelo Imperial. Long sweet aftertaste.

fantastic says it all. The smell is sweet and alluring. Tastes of raisin, molasses, and a little oak. Truly one of the best I have tried recently.

Po dříve představeném Abuelo Añejo, což byl 5 let starý rum z produkce firmy Varela Hermanos S.A. si představíme o dvě třídy vyzrálejší Abuelo 12y. Mezi nimi se v portfoliu značky nachází ještě Abuelo 7y. Zraje v sudech z bílého dubu a nevyrábí se z melasy, jako Añejo, ale z panenské šťávy cukrové třtiny. Některé zahraniční zdroje uvádějí, že sudy, ve kterých zraje, jsou po whisky a bourbonu.

Aroma: Tak tohle je originální, vůně je výrazná, s tóny cedrové dýhy, do které se balí doutníky, kůže, ořechy, tabák, rozinky, staré dřevo a dokonce mi evokuje kostel, něco ve stylu starého nábytku. (92 b)
Chuť: Chuť je příjemně nasládlá, velmi lahodná, přitom excelentně jemná, i v ústech jako bych cítil aroma kůže. Dochuť je přímo skvělá, stále se měnící, v závěru zemitá. (94 b)
Shrnutí: Tak tohle je pro mě opravdový skvost a velké překvapení z Panamy. Abuelo není ani nějak přehnaně sladký, ani nepůsobí tak těžkotonážně, jako Zapaca 23y, je to spíš jeho protipól. Je udivující, kolik zajímavých vůní a chutí se skrývá v tak jemném rumu.
