Great nose. This rum is not shy. Deep molasses, vanilla and nutmeg flavors. Smooth and chewy. Dark and mildly sweet. Nice spice. Good sipper. Good mixer. Not complex but smooth. Finish is a little short. Good alcohol bite. This is good, unique rum. A great Hawaiian.

It’s nice to sip. The flavor is a balance of many things, I recall cocoa, coffee, vanilla, clove, cinnamon. With other brands of spiced rum, I usually get all clove.
I visited the distillery and without that I would assume it’s yet another clovey spiced rum. But it’s actually very well done .. it’s different because it has just about the max of what would be tolerable. To me it’s all of the right flavors … cocoa, things you don’t get often.
Technically there is another Mahina… a white, the platinum. Hard to find.. just scarce , not in high demand or something

The distillery tour was interesting, they run 4 sprints out of there; whiskey, vodka, rum and gin. I tasted all except the vodka and can say they are doing some good work. The rum is pleasant but at the same time it wasn't anything special - I chose to leave empty handed.

Maui is my favorite part of the world, and I bought a bottle of the Mahina dark Premium Rum during my last visit to bring home. Nice bottle and nice color....but....this is by the the most over-flavored rum I've ever had. Really heavy molasses nose and flavoring, along with heavy spices.
Everyone has their preferences, but if both were cut by 2/3, it may actually let some rum shine through. Moving this one to the back of the liquor cabinet, as it's too hard to sip on its own.

Sweet, sugary caramel notes quickly followed by a floral tone. Maybe some maple notes at the finish as well. Not complex, but Mahina delivers on what it promises: a very nice molasses-based rum. It is a great mixer and can start in a cocktail.
