Roulaison Barrel Aged Reserve

United States | Aged

Roulaison Barrel Aged Reserve rum, a series of single barrel batch releases all aged over one year in used bourbon barrels (at the time of this writing). Each release has its own “peculiarities,” as the distillery calls them, from wine yeast fermentations to cask strength bottlings. When I first sipped this rum last night, my wild imagination took over. It was like a swamp monster that was half water moccasin and half medicine man invited me to partake with the promise of having the antidote if something goes wrong. The WOW factor was definitely there! Then I became puzzled on how this unique flavor came to be. Ah-ha, I thought!!! They must use cypress staves in the aging because that hardwood is too scarce to make entire barrels from.

Researching the distiller's website, I was wrong on all counts. The barrels that they use can come from wheated bourbon, single malt scotch, brandy, port wine, sherry, bourbon, or any number of others. Hard to pin this one down, but the end product is truly unique. However, the sad part about all of this is that if I buy another bottle next year, it may not taste the same as this one and I doubt that they could improve upon this one. Hopefully, they will stick with what works quite well for this one. Hard to describe, but very well done!

Take Roulaison’s white and age it 3 years in various whiskey barrels, blend, and you get this. Dry and not a bit sweet, sip neat or on the rocks. Price point and flavor uniqueness aside: For fans of aged rums in the style of US whiskeys, this will be a pleasant bar addition.

Light amber color.
Nose: not especially aromatic, a little bit of spice
Palate: not complex, sweet, peppery
Finish: warm spice and pepper

Overall not bad. Will not go out of my way to buy again. Looking forward to the BIB expression.
