I have been wanting to try this rum for quite some time but could not find any in this region. It took a trip to Jacksonville to get a bottle (and what a unique bottle it is). I'm glad I did.

In recent months I have read a lot about R. L. Seale and have come to admire his transparency and dedication to quality when it comes to rums produced by his company. All the ones under different names but produced by R. L. Seale & Company have been consistently good.

But I digress...

As I said this rum is not for the novice. It is a complex rum with a serious kick.

The color is a beautiful clear amber color. The aroma is outstanding and I seem to detect a hint of a fresh sugar cane fragrance. Maybe it's my imagination. I really don't know. I just know it smells good in my snifter. Swirling it in the snifter reveals great legs. It clings to the sides and slowly recedes leaving long tendrils of rum along the sides that manage to remain for a rather lengthy period of time.

It has layers of interesting flavors. For a brief time I detect buttery vanilla but that's replaced by a dry pepperiness with a multitude of spices (which I admittedly cannot distinguish specifics) within milliseconds. That dry pepperiness lasts for quite a while and there is a strong, but not overpowering burn in the back of my throat that slowly fades to a lingering warmth. This is clearly due to it being a tad stronger than typical rum (coming in at 86 proof [43% ABV]). The finish is rather dry. I also detect an oak undertone undoubtedly from tannins from the wood (it is, after all, a 10-year rum aged in used bourbon casks from what I have read) There is clearly no sugaring at all in this rum. Rather smooth yet dry. This is not a rum for those used to sweet rums. For those folks I could recommend this rum as a mixer. But for those who are into bourbon, scotch and whisky...especially those who like their bourbon, scotch and whisky neat...the R. L. Seale 10-year might be a rum appreciated by their palates. Personally I find this to be one of the most versatile rums on the market. I like it sipped straight (really, really small sips...anything more would be a little TOO much for me), with a little added water, with a single ice cube, in Coke Zero, and in adult beverages especially fruit-based adult beverages. Personally speaking I find the dryness and spices to be an excellent counter to citrus (including grapefruit juice) and pineapple juice. Even a dash of simple syrup brings out some of the flavoring one wouldn't detect with anything else.

An outstanding rum no matter how you take it.

Excellent for the price. Well balanced and you can perceive most of the good attributes from the Foursquare rums but for a fraction of the price.

RL Seale rum from Foursquare distillery is an awesome sipping rum. This is pure rum, no additives to change the product. You get a wonderful nose full after the pour, and caramel vanilla and toffee during the drink. A little burn but it's a really nice burn! With this price point it's something that should always be on your shelf! Cheers!

This is one of my favorites, and I'm swiftly back to it now that I have found an app where I can start recording notes. I still don't have the proper vocabulary for this, but this has the right mix of aromatics and flavor to let the rum sit on my tongue while the roof of my mouth feels the aromatics.

Also an excellent mixture with sodas.

I finally got my hands on this one and it just does not taste like a rum at all. It is almost as bad as the Clement 10 year from Martinique. However, since this would be a fantastic gateway rum to introduce bourbon drinkers to rum, I give it my highest rating possible of a 6. I personally would not buy it again or rate it as a 5, but there is no point in me swaying someone away from something that they may wind up liking. Each to their own. For me, the best of the budget rums from Richard Seale is Doorly's XO. I will add that it needs to breathe in the snifter. Still in all, one never knows if they are drinking bourbon or rum. I pass on this one.

Update February 6, 2019: After giving this one time to breathe in the opened bottle, it began to taste better. So I tested it again neat against Doorly's 8 year in Glencairn glasses. I must say that it is slightly better than the Doorly's 8 Year. Give this one time and you may well learn to like it.

Update January 19, 2022: I finally got a hold of this one's older sister, the 12 year old with the blue label on the bottle. At about twice the price of this one, it is not much better. Bitterness keeps it from me rating it higher. Some would call this 12 year old as a poor man's Foursquare ECS. That is not even close. And since I had to drive 200 miles to find a bottle (along with other old favorites), I chose not to do a full review or add it to my massive spreadsheet.

A fantastic rum in a spectacular bottle. The fragrance is very nice and in the mouth you can feel exotic fruits and some cinnamon. The 43 % gives it also a perfect power.
I think it can compete with Appleton 21 at an much more competitive price.

While in my local adult beverage supermarket, I was looking for some new rums to try. I have a champagne taste but have a beer budget. Based on reviews by Rum Ratings fans, I chose Doorly’s and RLS 10-year, which fit my budget. Tried the Doorly’s first, which I really like, and have already rated. But when I took my first sip of RLS I said “now that is nice!” Nice deep, mature taste that boarders on good Scotch. Great for sipping on the rocks. Easily one of my favorites, especially at this price point.

The bottle actually tells the story. This is a well thought out and perfectly executed rum. On the nose it's very sweet and you think you're going to be drowned by a Plantation style syrup bomb but then you taste it and you start speaking Richard Seale's name quietly under your breath. You build a small shrine to him and buy exclusively four square products from then on. Two more things. If you like them sweet or you are new to rum, try some other things first. Secondly, if you are coming from the Whisky World this will let you in to how rum is so different from whisky but just as good.

Aaah...Barbados ich träum von dir... Bajan-Style.....
Schönes Bernstein mit Kupferreflexen im Glas. Gelungenes Flaschendesign !

Aaah ... Barbados I dream of you ... Bajan style .....
Beautiful amber with copper reflexes in the glass. Successful bottle design!
In the nose, freshly fallen foliage placed in lemon juice, which is lying on a caramel in an old cigar box.
In the palate, the tongue is covered with the subtle sweetness of dark chocolate.
Vanilla pudding with caramel sauce on roasted oak boards with spices and herbs.
Wonderful balanced, pure rum, without sugar and additives!
In the finish, the experience continues, nuts in caramel with a pinch of pepper, very long lasting.
An honest rum for a good price. For those who don't want to go for sugar bombs.
