What is it: cane-juice rhum from Martinique aged at least partly in France and bottled there, too. Apparently they got into some hot water for claiming this as "Appellation Rhum Contrôlée" on the abel when in fact it does not qualify as "AOC Martinique Rhum agricole". (Ask Ed Hamilton or Martin Cate for more info.) In any case, it was aged for 7 years and bottled at 47% ABV.
Tasting notes: Deep nose. Deep flavor. Hint of grass, but a good amount of oak. Kinda funky. Really nice.
Takeaway: Despite the controversy surrounding this rum, I found myself really, really enjoying it! I just love it. It's different than any other "agricole" I've had, and I'd love to know exactly what to attribute this to—the fermentation or distillation? Just the ageing? Who knows. But it's totally my jam. Too bad it's long gone from the shelves...
