Aroma is smooth and fruity sweet. First taste is smooth, sweet and fruity. After appear some grass, apples and flowers. Aftertaste could be longer and is a bit bitter.

I agree it's rather whiskey-like, like a well-aged bourbon or even a rye. It has this rather spice-like aroma. Hence it's a good choice for the vintage tiki cocktail called "three dots and a dash" which calls for some aged rhum agricole. It's remarkable how the other ingredients, the pimento dram and the falernum, highlight this rum's aroma of its own, so this is a sophisticated cocktail, no trash.

Trois Rivieres rhums are not the greatest for me, but decided to visit them again anyway. The blend of 99/00 and 09 is pretty good, grassy, has the smoke from oak barrels, but lacks the wow-factor for me. In this price range you can find cheaper and better products (like HSE sherry or wine barrel editions etc.) torn between 6 and 7, will rate it at 6.6.

Dry, quite elegant, many aromas behind a strong oak taste. Will be appreciate by whisky lovers

Le nez plutôt léger.
La bouche plutôt bon et pas très agressif.
Du bon rhum mais en dessous d'un JM ou Neisson à mon avis.

The nose on this rum is spectacular. After letting it sit a bit from the Glencairn I get Toffee, Banana, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, faint notes of Black Pepper, something akin to wet forest floor and then Tiramisu. The combination is both intriguing and delightful. It whispers to you like Pandora’s box. It presents very differently from other aged Agricoles I have had but it is very well balanced.

Taking a sip is a sharp awakening. It’s not at all what you expect from what you get on the nose. It’s quite shocking in its difference that at first it really threw me off. First, I get Black peppercorns accompanied by an almost outrageous amount of French Oak. It’s like licking a black peppercorn covered in sharpie. It slaps your tongue around for a second before mellowing into an interesting menagerie of spices and zest. Following the brute force of the French oak I get the spicy end of cinnamon accompanied by Menthol, the distinct sour note of biting into a fresh Rosemary sprig which is then followed by orange peel - not the fruit, but the peel itself. It took me quite a while to figure out if I liked it at all, but after a couple more sips it really started to grow on me. Yes this is delicious…not even remotely what I expected but intriguingly enjoyable.

The finish brings yet another absolutely delightful experience, and quite different yet again from either the nose or the palate. After the palate fades the mouth is left with a very dry combination of what starts as vanilla bean before morphing into cigar tobacco leaf (like biting an aged tobacco leaf) and Menthol. After not drinking it for about 10 minutes my mouth is left with a combination of toffee, a touch of sea water and Menthol.

The more and longer I sip on this the better it gets.

This rum is very multifaceted and complex for an aged Agricole. If you are seeking a super complex aged Agricole, this would be my singular recommendation. At times it can be a bit shocking and sharp within its intrigue. There is a lot going on here, most of which is delightful but also comes unexpected. Even though there is a lot going on here it is also fairly well balanced. It also builds up quite nicely over time so the longer you sip it the better it gets.

One thing to note, after the initial shock on the palate I added a little bit of water. Big mistake. It did add a Blackberry jam note on the palate….and then turned everything else into a jumbled sour mess that was entirely unpalatable - to the point that I had to pour it out. Yeah, do NOT dilute this rum. This rum is clearly meant to be enjoyed neat. Most rums open up a bit with water. This one does not. Adding water thoroughly ruins this rum.

Overall this is really good. Part of me wants to say that it is even better than just “pretty good”. For those of you whose primary objective is complexity, this one should be very high on your list. It is most definitely complex and multifaceted in every phase. I thoroughly enjoy most of what this rum offers even if takes a wild ride to decipher it.

For 48 Euros this is quite an experience. I don’t cherish it quite as much as I do Neisson Reserve Speciale, but it is certainly an adventure. I place this one as something interesting and unique to enjoy sipping on from time to time by perhaps just short of the “buy a backup bottle” tier on my list.

This is for the 2001-2005-2011 version which is unfortunately not included in the rumratings library.

This is a very good rhum agricole. The bottle promises that cellar master Daniel Baudin has managed to combine the best of both strength and delicacy of flavor in his mix of 3 different millesimes, and indeed the bottle does deliver on that. Also a fantastic value at the price this is sold for. A true sipping agricole with an outstanding length to the after taste. This has been aged in bourbon barrels and brand new oak barrels and the aging creates something quite reminiscent to a very good cognac. Recommended as a sipping agricole, especially at the very competitive price.

Sembra uno scotch whiskey con note vegetali, pepate e tostate molto lontane, secondo me il bar ha miscelato il contenuto oppure l'ha direttamente sostituito 😔
