Tasty, but not quite great
Visited the Trois Rivieres distillery while vacationing in Martinique. Open tasting bar. Triple Vintage 1999 - 2000 - 2009 was priced at EUR 75 per bottle at the distillery. Nice and sturdy box surrounding a basic bottle and label design. Golden color. Traditional very dry Rhum Agricole flavors complemented with plenty of grass and oak to your nose and palate. Quite a kick at the end. Rhum Agricole lovers can add 2 points to the score.
I agree it's rather whiskey-like, like a well-aged bourbon or even a rye. It has this rather spice-like aroma. Hence it's a good choice for the vintage tiki cocktail called "three dots and a dash" which calls for some aged rhum agricole. It's remarkable how the other ingredients, the pimento dram and the falernum, highlight this rum's aroma of its own, so this is a sophisticated cocktail, no trash.
Trois Rivieres rhums are not the greatest for me, but decided to visit them again anyway. The blend of 99/00 and 09 is pretty good, grassy, has the smoke from oak barrels, but lacks the wow-factor for me. In this price range you can find cheaper and better products (like HSE sherry or wine barrel editions etc.) torn between 6 and 7, will rate it at 6.6.
