100% pot-still rum from Monymusk, aged on-pemise. 40% ABV.
N: Fruits, fusel oils, rubber, glue, bike chains. So a bit like a Caroni, but much fruitier and less dry. A note of cherry that I usually don’t care for (typically in aged agricoles) but here the note plays well with all the others. Not much “hogo,” so to speak, but still super interesting!
The palate is complex—woody, fruity, nutty, bitter. With the bitter notes (on both the nose and palate), it seems even older than its 12 years.
The finish is medium, fading too soon due to its relatively weak strength. Which is my major complaint. 43% would be nice, 50% would be heavenly. Even at a paltry 40, it was a good deal at K&L that totally flew under the radar. I really hope they bring it back! It's a nice sip, and makes a killer Mai Tai.* Definitely would buy again.
*One could make a convincing argument that this is the closest thing reasonably available to the venerated W&N 17, in terms of flavor profile. 100% pot distilled in Jamaica, aged there, woody and nutty. From the horse's mouth: "surprisingly golden in color, medium bodied, but with the rich pungent flavor particular to the Jamaican blends." Why not?
I actually enjoy the Royal Jamaican Rums. So I thought I'd try their 'premium' 12 year aged rum (I put 'premium' in quotes as it only costs $29.99 at K&L Wines, 2018).
I tried it next to their gold rum, which is a pretty decent gold rum, and I struggled to determine which I liked better. Ultimately, I think I prefer their gold (though it was very close).
Smells and tastes of oak, spice, molasses, burnt sugar, and a hint of chocolate. I prefer the gold, as it has a nice hint of butterscotch to it.
Not bad, but not quite as good as I had hoped.
