Pusser's British Navy ”Nelson’s Blood” 15-Year rum

Pusser's British Navy ”Nelson’s Blood” 15-Year

Virgin Islands, British | Aged | 40% ABV

Pusser’s British Navy Rum 15-Year is a blend of five rums from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados which are produced in mainly wooden pot stills. The blend is aged for 15 years.

The company derives its name from the British Navy 'Purser' who distributed a daily 'tot' of rum ration to each sailor - a tradition which lasted from 1655 until 1970. In 1979 Charles Tobias obtained the rights to blend the original recipe of the British Navy Rum.

Pusser's British Navy Rum is casually known as “Nelson’s Blood” as a nod to the famous death of Admiral Nelson. After being mortally wounded in a naval battle in 1805, Nelson’s body was preserved in a barrel of rum.

Upon my first snifter of this highly rated rum, I was sorely disappointed for doling out $45. Those first few neat sips were like a punch in the face from the raw alcohol taste. I first rated it as a 5 and compared it to an enticing young lady who suckers gullible guys in and then grabs them by the throat and takes all of their money. I shoved that bottle to the back of my cabinet for a few days.

Then being snowed in and running out of rums to try from my cabinet, I gave this one another chance. Now I knew that one needs to let their rum breathe before sipping, but I have never had one breathe within it's bottle after only a few sips. Talk about night and day and it's character really showed it's colors! Oh my God! The aroma (I hate the term "nose") opens up like a sweet smelling tropical bouquet! The closest I would compare the taste would be Mount Gay XO with a lot more subtle flavors and smoothness, so this Pusser's gets an upgrade to a 9 rating. It just keeps getting better each day!

Yes, it has added sugars, which most rum distillers use these days, but they can't seem to win unanimous approval from fellow rum drinkers. If one wants no added sugars, then go with Don Q Gran Anejo or Flor de Cana 18, but try not to to complain about boring taste. I personally don't like rums without added sugars and have stated so in those reviews. Most of the rest of the fine rums will plead guilty to adding sugars. Hey, after spending 12 years or more in wooden barrels and losing a lot of volume to the angel's share, the distiller has to do something to make the results readily marketable, and I would compare this skill with the best of chefs who know exactly how to season their dishes. That in itself is a fine art!

Update May 3, 2018: This one has not withstood the test of time, so it gets docked one point. Not bad, but not great after sitting half full in the bottle for a few months.

Update June 23, 2019: I finally found another bottle, which is rare in these parts. This highly sweetened rum is one sure way to ruin a perfectly good Central American Arabica coffee. And due to the amount of added sugar, so much as one glass of this will have your ass married to the royal porcelain throne the next morning with diarrhea. You have been warned!!! I have lowered my rating for this reason.

A dark and "robust" looking rum. The nose has notes of wood, leather, tobacco, chocolate, marcipan and cherry's. It's nice for sure. The palate starts of with the cherry's, marcipan and chocolate. It's fairly sweet(end). It then roll's on to sweet pipe tobacco and leather, finishing on the rounded wooden note. It's a great flurry of flavours and in a lot of ways a very good rum but unfunately a bit to sweet for my liking, restraining this bottle from a 9 rating.

I'm kind of new to rum being a single malt whiskey person but this rum has definitely turned me. I've been trying quite a few different rums, even got the 24 dram from Masters of Malt. They only allow 1 bottle of this Pussers per order. What's that tell you? By far this one keeps up with those costing hundreds. No kidding! I'm sold on this and get it every chance.I can, since it doesnt last long. Especially when it's in the Pusser's 15yr old Trafalger decanter! Like those good old scotch's ( such as Glenfiddich 21 yr old in a Wedgewood decanter for instance, which by the way is aged in RUM casks! $600-900. Wouldn't it be something if they used Pusser's casks.) Why make a decanter if it's not the best? Good question?AYE! Update, I've tried a few more finely aged rums. OK, so it's obvious they put sugar in their rum but I gotta tell you, not only do they know how to distill rum but they also know just how much sugar to add to put this on top period. Still #1 in my book!

Since I don't remember the palate, I'll just fill out the chars...

Mouth: Dried fruit, dates, tobacco, and a little caramel. A little spicy but not harsh. The warmth lingers for awhile and allows the caramel notes to resurface later.

Nose: blackstrap molasses.

I would call it a "must", if you're starting to assemble a good rum shelf.

It is what a good navy rum should be... woody tones, a little bitter, smoky aroma but smooth and pleasant in the mouth. I doubt the sailors ever accessed such an aged and fine rum, but I could imagine sailing with a bottle of this one :)

Great for rum tasting, to provide a different feel amongst the other rums...

...divided by this rum. Had quite high expectations since I had heard it would be a nice rum, but I don't think it delivered. Too much oak and sort of a whiskey taste to it.

Never had the regular Pusser before but I am sure it will cross my path one day. This beauty was far mellower than i expected with a warmer more rounded and pleasant after taste than I imagined. Lovely oily vanilla coating on the tongue full of warm sweetness with just the correct amount of alcohol and oak for my taste, wholeheartedly recommended.

I finished my discovery of navy rum Pusser's by 15 years. It is sweeter than others with notes of vanilla, oak and spices. Rounder and soft, it reveals fruity palate with figs and chocolate. Nice rum.

Took me some time to find a bottle in town but well worth the wait. Very smooth and "clean". I like the blue label but the red label is a grown up version. Lost is the sharp, punch in the face from other Navy rums, replaced with a satisfying drink. Well done sir, well done.

Alkohol: 40 %
Původ: Britské Panenské ostrovy
Aroma: Hodně výrazná, sladce kořenitá, až opulentní vůně, připomíná mi perník. Koření, čokoláda, marmeláda. Hřejivý dojem. Včelí plástve, kůže, v druhé vlně pak i něco těžších květinových vůní. (91 b)
Chuť: Sladkost jen mírná (asi tak 1/3), stylově mi trochu připomíná sudy po sherry, ale dle informací výrobce víme jen tolik, že si poležel 15 let v opálených sudech. Suchá těžká kořenitost, závan pendreku, v dochuti pak karamel a připálené rozinky z vánočky. Přes to vše mi přijde zároveň jemný. (87 b)
Body: 89
