While it's always fun to hate on the big guys, Bacardi 8 is a legitimately decent rum.
Definitely more added sugar than I remember from the old label, with caramel and spice overtaking the bright peach/apricot notes.
It's solidly "okay", but won't be buying another bottle, even on special.
This is one of my go-to every day rums for daiquiris and other rum forward mixes. It’s readily available and reasonably priced.
The smell was very nice, a little woody. The first sip slid in nicely and tasted very smooth. Then came a little burning taste in my throat and a small aftertaste on the front of my tongue. Very tasty, and in the cola it was absolutely great. I give the ocho an eight!
The first thing that struck me about the Bacardi Reserva Ocho 8 Gold is the ethanol that comes through. It's almost petrochemical in making its first impression and immediately made me imagine that it was stronger than it is. This said, it's a half-decent rum and good with coke. The flavour is a little more bland than I'd have expected but it's a mass market brand so my expectation might've been too high. Anyway, goes down easily although dry as a sipper, with a pleasant spicy back end.

I should rate it 6,5 but i cannot. Drank it strongly chilled and and it's not the best way to taste it.

Lots of alcohol up front, light flavor fading to a hint of butterscotch or maple. The finish is short. It seems as if it would mix well with coke but does not offer much for long slow sipping. Nose is the same as flavor.

Not all that much going on though. Short finish. Light body.

The nose is sweet vanilla, apricots, honey, tobacco and a hint of white oak, the taste starts with sweet apricot jam, then turns to leather and spicy, bitter, woody-tobacco kick. The aftertaste again starts sweet, and turns to spicy bitter, medium length. I would say there is a small amount of sugar added, under 15gpl. If you like rums from Panama, where the tobacco is usually one of the main components of the smell and taste profile, you will most probably like this one too. I would say it is a very different story from Don Q (also Puerto Rico), but for the money - why not. Score between 6 and 7.
It’s light, slightly floral. It’s quite a fresh nose with a lot of vanilla and light milk chocolate.
"There is a honeyed sweetness with this rum which does become a little cloying at times. That combines with a slightly bitter finish which becomes a touch over oaked."

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
