Plantation XO 20th Anniversary rum is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled Barbadian rums that are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks for 12-20 years. They are then transported to France for a second 12-18 months aging in small French oak casks.
The first bottle of Plantation XO 20th Anniversary was created for the head of Cognac Ferrand Estate Alexandre Gabriel to honor his 20th year running the company. This special gift has resulted in the bottling we see today.
Nice sweet summer rum, light and pleasant, but a little bit too sweet as for me. Nice notes of coconut and tropical fruits beautifully combined with gentle oakiness. A good sipping choice.
Nose: Light, creamy, coconut notes, vanilla, fruitiness (apricots, lychees), toffee, white chocolate
Palate: Sweet, hint of ginger, vanilla butterscotch, apricots, melon, a bit of oak
Finish: Short, sweet, slightly nutty and oaky, orange zest, coconut water
Had for the first time and very smooth. Especially get the vanilla. Definitely worthy of a spot in the liquor cabinet.
What not to love about this rum?
The bottle design is lovely and majestic.
The aroma tells of some vanilla.
The taste is well balanced and not to sweet nor to harsh, very smooth
Oh my, over a year since I reviewed this. I was excited when I found it at a big liquor warehouse. But it was a different bottle and different experience. Sill a very good rum. But not as I reviewed in 2015. Until now I hadn't realized the bottle that showed up in my cabinet was not what I'd had. I'll post both. I'm still not sure what the difference is? Both are 20th anniversary edition. Both are XO but no specific age. Both are Barbados rum. The rum I
Prefer and gave a 9 to is the shorter, squater bottle without the string/rope mesh around the bottle.
The bottle with the mesh is slightly less sweet. It is darker, than the honey gold of the shorter bottle. It doesn't have as much complexity. It's still a decent sipper but falls short of great.
Here's my original review. It is for the shorter, squater, empty:-( bottle on the left.
This is a very complex rum. It's not overly sweet and through the aging process used it does share some characteristics of Cognac. There is a fair amount of oak for a rum. Vanilla, caramel and I think I'm picking up coconut and even chocolate. There's no burn and a long finish. If you're going to spend the money know your rums or you won't appreciate this as much as it deserves!
easy to drink, taste and smell very delicious, sweet and fruity, must have rum, will buy again and again and again!
The first taste was surprise for me. Stronger than expected, still in my hall of fame.
Sweet scent, semi sweet taste. I can clearly taste vanilla but its not overwhelming. The whole rum is very well balanced and smooth. Maybe the best sipping rum out there.
What a great, straight rum. Light and little sweet, as I prefer it. Great taste.
This is one of my favorites, it's a good price and it's just amazing. For summer days, for winter nights it just tastes great whenever you drink it.. I am truly a fan of this one! Please don't mix this one, it needs to be enjoyed on its own with 2 cubes of ice..
Rhum sucré et fruité un must have.excellent rapport qualité prix avec ce XO
One of the most complex rum ever tried.
For smell and taste: vanilla, coconut and oak spices (as far as I can recognize).
Long and fine aftertaste, double ageing is amazing work.
No alcohol burn but with a good structure. Not too sweet.
For the price, a must have...
Read some reviews and am amazed to read things like "oddball" and "not completely smooth" and can only say that after 4 bottles it is still a perfect 10, smooth, awsome nose and complex taste finishing of very but very smoothly
The bottle is incredibly heavy and large and wrapped in raffia. It has a very thick glass bottom, nice printing and labels. The stopper is made of a plastic cork imitation with a huge wooden handle with an inserted brass plate. A little overshoot.
The copper-brown rum has a tempting sweet caramel and oak smell, which will not disappoint. It is quite sweet, tastes of toffee and caramel, with lots of wood and oak. Ripe fruits and some leather add to tihs in a pleasant combination, Maybe also some chocolate and vanilla. Uncommon is the subtle coconut taste, which is a great addition to the aforementioned aromas. It has a quite long after taste and, all in all, is a complex combination and a great sip.
Syrupy, rich and tangy. Odd, cloying liqueur taste can only be compared to the Plantation Original Dark. Apparently about 12 years old.
Really smoot rum, get notes of dark chocolate and butter. There is a dominant coconut flavour, however this does not bother me at all. Can imagine that after a few glasses in a row the coconut can become a bit unpleasant. For a long time this was one of my favourites rum, but now I don't find it that interesting anymore and a bit too sweet.
However its great to get familiar with good rums at a reasonable price point.
This rum will ruin most other rums for you going forward. Tremendous flavor and body with a lasting finish. Has, in my opinion, best presentation when left to breath for a few minutes.
Reasonably smooth and on the sweet side. For the price a descent bottle.
This is a real good rum, good taste and not that expensive, get it if you see it.
A very interesting rum as one finds. Starting with cane juice aged in bourbon casks and finished in cognac barrels. Adding an interesting character vindictive of a good agricole rhum. Low heat with decent finishing notes.
