Plantation XO 20th Anniversary rum is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled Barbadian rums that are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks for 12-20 years. They are then transported to France for a second 12-18 months aging in small French oak casks.
The first bottle of Plantation XO 20th Anniversary was created for the head of Cognac Ferrand Estate Alexandre Gabriel to honor his 20th year running the company. This special gift has resulted in the bottling we see today.
Smooth, sweet, long aftertaste. I had a small sip of this rum and I very liked it. Price is not so pleasant, but I think, it is worth to pay. Definetly getting a bottle soon.
Got it like week ago as present and it was a pleasure to drink with no after burn in throat.
This is a standout choice. Almost an archetype of what Caribbean spiced rum should be.
Mouth:bananas, toasted coconuts, molasses.
Nose: warmth like a parents embrace.
This rum is exceptionally smooth, exceptionally tasty, exceptionally exceptional.
I gave this to a coworker who thought they only enjoyed nice whisky, and their eyes lit up. "I never knew rum could be smooth!" He's now a happy convert.
I mean, the initial smell hit me some floral sweet textures. My first sample of the rum within 30 seconds of the release from the bottle gave strong vanilla notes, with a mild, yet completely suitable burn. But patience is virtue. Waiting roughly 8-10 minutes for rum to breathe, the rum introduced cocoa, milk chocolate coupled with a cinnamon-like aftertaste. Reminded me of my aunt's rum flavored chocolates. The conclusion was a medium,long, delicate and mildly sweet aftertaste

I purchased this bottle to celebrate the birth of my first daughter Layla. Everything about this bottle attracts me, and has been a challenging 5 months trying not to try it as the bottle sat in my liquor cabinet. The packaging was a nicely textured and sturdy cardboard box which protects the perfectly crafted bottle that's elegantly wrapped in palm leaves. Getting down to the good stuff, this rum is liquid gold and is perfection in a bottle. Smooth crisp flavors, that storm your pallet one after another with complexity that I was unable to distinguish from the 2 glasses that I had. I tip my hat to the Plantation Rum company for this one. Although, this isn't the best rum that I've ever tried; it is the best that I have had in a long time. The rum is aged to the point to hit the peak flavor for this rum, and the amount of traveling that these bottles have gone through is astonishing.
Made by a cognac maker. Smells of vanilla and coconut. Sweet taste. Finish with dusty cocoa and cigar box.

First touch with ron is amazing.wonderful taste of vanilla and old barrel where aging has been done. Only something nice to smoke is missing. Great drinking minutes of tasting. :-)
...because of the good reviews this rum gets despite it being comparatively low priced.
I thought maybe it's the upmarket design of the bottle which deceives people into thinking this is premium stuff.
Well I was wrong. This is hands down the best value for a spirit of this quality I've come across.
Do yourself a favour and get a bottle.

A perfect rum. All my buddies loved it. Well balanced, nice complexity, interesting flavors and not too sweet. So, if this is a perfect rum, is there a better? And is it not more interesting to have a rum with small edges? Perhaps to smooth, but I can't say right now...

This rum is fantastic from the nose to the finish. The bottle and cork is absolutely beautiful and is a nice rum to display. From start to completion the tastes go through a changing process which end with a long lingering sweet but not to sweet finish. You will experience fruits, spice, hint of leather, a touch of tobacco and finish with caramel, vanilla and ever so slight sprinkling of chocolate. The finish is the very best part of enjoying the excellent creation. You gotta drink this one either neat or on the rocks! It truly does Rock!
I have already taste few rums from Plantation and I have never been dissapointed. This XO 20th Anniversary is provided in a nice bottle 'Plantation ' style with a nice cap. Really good looking. It really need to take a breath of fresh air to release all his aromas. You have to be patient but it is worth. Vanilla and caramel are well present plus a little something else. Good and pleasant aftertaste. Definitively a very good one !

I bought this rum based on reviews on this site. I had previously tried the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva (great but too sweet), El Dorado 15 (tastes like Whisky to me), and Mount Gay XO (good foundation but nothing extraordinary).
This is really great. I can smell coconut and banana, and I can taste it too. I don't get the vanilla too much.
I find the burn to be stronger than the others I have tried, especially when smelling. It can use a little water or sitting on the counter for a while.
Really pleased, too bad it cost me CAD $80+.
I generally like drier rums; the Pampero Aniversario is stretching my sweetness limits. I'm not supposed to like this, but damn it, it's a gorgeous indulgence. Tropical fruit galore - pineapple, mango, coconut, et al - with no pretense at appealing to a scotch or bourbon snob, but yet...another bottle finds its way into the cabinet. Maybe if I hide it behind some Lagavulin or Caol Ila, no one will see it.
The sugar hit, fortunately is all upfront and gets whisked away by the bouquet of fruit, with only the merest hint of black tea or leather to keep it from being fruit cocktail. I prefer it to the burnt molasses assault of the Abuelo Centuria, (which should be arrested for the brutality by which it subdues the older rum within it).
Lastly, a gorgeous viscosity.

I feel this is the most talked about and widely recognized rum in the Plantation range. It was named spirit of the years a few weeks ago by the Whisky Exchange and is often back order here in Quebec.
Having taste it a few times, I must say I understand the buzz. In fact it's so popular that Ferrand recently built a new aging cellar just for their star.
It is also very much of it's time, with an impressive decanter presentation, and a marketing wise clever and somewhat misleading "20" on the label.
As most people here know this is not an age statement, but a replica of a special blend that was createed in secret by their Master a few years back to celebrate the 20th year of owner Alexandre Gabriel at the head of Cognac Ferrand. Mr Gabriel was so pleased and impressed that he decided to make it part of the Plantation catalogue.
The Ambassador for Ferrand North America recently confirmed me that the base of the blend is 10 to 12 years old, but most importantly that is it finished an extra 18 months to 5 years in used Cognac casks.
So yes it is delicious and decadant, with some distinctive "patissieres" (baking) flavours, and a very nice gift and easy pick in its ultra premium category.
