Multiple | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still Distilled

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary rum is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled Barbadian rums that are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks for 12-20 years. They are then transported to France for a second 12-18 months aging in small French oak casks.

The first bottle of Plantation XO 20th Anniversary was created for the head of Cognac Ferrand Estate Alexandre Gabriel to honor his 20th year running the company. This special gift has resulted in the bottling we see today.

Those who are against adding sugar to rum post-distillation will be the ones that don't fancy Plantation XO. If you appreciate when a distillery does so with good taste and finesse, then you will more than likely find this to be an exceptional tasting. Have it neat, with a little water or ice, or in an old-fashioned. Lots of tropical fruit notes and a rich, caramelized depth. Baja style taken under French influence for blending and bottling (they traditionally add sugar when they bottle cognac).

I was in love with the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva until I tried this. It has the same underlying sweetness from the congeners that the Diplomatico does, but without the added sugar to finish it (yes, you really can tell the difference). This tastes the way you imagine a fine rum should taste - toffee, wood, a hint of leather, and sweetness without sugariness. If this were a whiskey of similar quality, it would easily cost $120 a bottle.

Edit after some years: changed from 10 to 7. Still good but way too sweet and the alcohol burn is not that well-rounded.

This rum represents everything I love in sippers. Tones of dark chocolate and vanilla with very pleasant burn. I was affraid that it will be too sweet like many others in this age, but fortunately that wasnt the case.

I only started trying different rums since the beginning of this year and I decided to purchase this one after reading many of the reviews here and because the price was reasonable, considering the ratings.
This was (basically) the 4th bottle of rum that I tried and right now I want to buy the entire world's supply of this. I should be giving it a 9 instead of a 10, because there are so many more rums for me to discover, but I have a feeling it will be hard to top this one (since this is still affordable at €54 here). Read some of the 9+ reviews and you know what to expect when you buy this...

There is so much good stuff to type about this rum that I will just end there and go buy some more bottles of this 50 euro rum because it is the best way to spend your money.
