I recently discovered this while on vacation in Nicaragua - it was well worth the risk of deviating from straight rums. This is more a liqueur than flavored rum, even though it is literally just FdC rum, flavored with coffee and cane sugar. It has a wonderful espresso profile, not sickly saccharine in character and just enough rum to burn through and be something special on its own. Mixing into coffee adds oomph to the beverage, but dilutes the character so much - perhaps, from the heat - that you lose that silky blend of flavors as they are separated out into your cup. It is perfect as a digestivo, or paired with a dessert of fresh fruits or ice cream, or poured over pound cake and cookies.
I’ve yet to try this in a proper cocktail, but enjoyed it poured straight into a coconut (with its own juice); eating the Spresso-soaked meat afterward is a treat. It will make a definitive Black/White Russian, I imagine, and will certainly be added to some tiki favorites calling for java flavors.
I don’t foresee myself stocking Kahlua again, so long as I can get my hands on this...
Can’t wait until it gets to the states! The drink that I’ve been looking for!
This is the best coffee flavored liquor and is made using 7 year aged rum. Absolute Perfection. A must try for a rum and coffee lover.
Enjoyed some of the Flor de Cana Spresso Coffee Liqueur while vacationing in Costa Rica. Very exciting and different bottle and label design. Very dark color, almost black. I'm not a coffee drinker, so the coffee liqueur does not rock my boat, but I'm sure this is decent stuff for coffee lovers. Simply not my cup of tea, or in this case cup of coffee.
