East, smooth drinking. Easy to pair. Tried it in Antigua Guatemala and bummed I did not bring it home with me.
Tonight’s Rum, Colonial Reserva Especial Colección Patrimonio Artesano from Guatemala. Long name, I know. This one is a birthday gift from my daughter, she visited the country in November. It’s reported to be made with a blend of rums aged 3 to 10 years, aged in American Oak, and flavoured with vanilla and prunes! The makers have been only making Rum since 1953 and produce smaller batch Artisan Rums. Here we go:
In the glass it’s a nice deep copper colour with hint of dark orange. The nose is familiar; you know it’s a Rum. I find honey, pineapple, brown sugar and a slight grassiness. It’s pleasant and welcoming.
The first sip surprisingly reveals notes of spices; it was not expected. There’s no shock of heat, but after the second sip it grows. Not bad though. Flavours include dry orange, honey, wood and bit of tobacco, and those flavours hang on the tongue for a while. The vanilla on the nose is almost gone in the mouth. In the throat, it’s easy. Not heat free, just average. The finish is dry that lasts and might be said to turn slightly sour. I might say, oddly, the finish has a mild flavour of Thrills gum.
I give this one a strong 7/10 because of the dryness and near bitter finish. If you like a dryer Rum, I’m sure an 8 is in there somewhere. Decent served neat and also decent for a Rum & Coke. Sadly you’ll not likely find it in a BC liquor store. In the US maybe… #367 of my 500 Rum goal. Cheers.

Good value for the price. Would definitely repurchase
La botella es muy bonita y prometedora.
Lindo color caoba.
En nariz muy , algo de fruta y un poco de especias.
En boca sabroso, frutado y suave.
Un buen spiced.
This is very good choice for a dark rum. The purity is experienced next day by not having hangovers, just like drinking a good quality scotch. The okey flavor is very good & the quality bottle with the leather ornament adds a ‘colonial’ touch to the experience.
My friend at the Mai Kai last night busted this treat out from his personal cabinet. Imported from Guatemala, I don’t think it’s available here but I could be wrong. This is a top notch well balanced sipper, not too sweet just a pure rum with hints of molasses, smokey oak and fruit.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

No idea how this came from Guatemala as there’s a standard quality I’ve come to expect from the region. It’s bitter a bit rancid and tastes watered down all at the same time with a burnt finish. Bottle is beautiful though.
