This being Plantation workhorse, it is quite representative of the house style.
Tropical aromas on the nose: banana, mango, coconut and some light baking spices.
Medium body, the mouth as a bit more texture than most golden rums = probably the result of the classic bajan wayof mixing copper pot and column stills distillates.
Finish is a bit short but with some delicious orange marmalade notes.
In my local this is pretty much the same price as El Dorado 12 and Appleton Estate Extra/ 12yo, all three of them being excellent choices, I feel the Plantation is the most versatile one. Could easily be sipped straight or on the rocks, but lots of tropical flavours that carry on in a premium cocktail and not to much wood.
This Holiday season I went through a bottle making some buttered rum and the result was fantastic.

Good price and good rum. It may not be the most complex but for the price it's smooth and tasty.

Easily available anywhere, not overly sweet, great for any cocktail or ti-punch

I certify this review is my own opinion and that I do not have a professional affiliation with Diplomatico.

Poměr ceny / kvality je velmi dobrý. Není to na skleničku k rozjímaní, ale za tu cenu se to chlastá parádně.

All of the Plantation rums are good, and bring great value, since they are not expensive.

For some reason or another MG eclipse was my first rum a couple of years ago and I was not impressed. I figured I would give rum another try earlier this year and bought Plantation 5 year and have been on a rum run ever since. Recently bought my 2nd bottle just because I have tried many different rums since then and wanted to get back to where it all started from and to post the most fair rating I could, not by relaying on past memory. I have to credit this rum for my love of rums today. Between this and Stades No. 8 I know of no other rum that can beat the value - under $25. If anyone reads this and can offer a better value rum than this, please let me know.

Sampled at the Laka Lono Rum Club tasting on 5/28/20. Pours a rich gold color. Upfront pepper. Tannins and oakiness. You know you've tasted the barrel on this one.

The Plantation Grande Reserve 5 is a light coloured, aromatic rum with loads of subtleties to its flavour profile. Be warned though; said subtle flavours will be totally lost if you dare to use this as a mixer. Neat, it's fantastic; a proper sipper that you'll really enjoy. Mixed, it disappears into the background as though it's just some bland, generic product—which it DEFINITELY isn't—and tragically loses everything you enjoyed about it. I'll certainly get this again. Thumbs up.

Smooth, tasty, with just a hint (my imagination?) of cinnamon. A great value for a rum to drink with ice

Barbados 5 years is one easy rum you can start with. It's tasty, sweet, last note not too long. A good introduction for beginners and amateurs of rum.
