In Venezuela they know how to make good rum. First I have Diplomatico and now this one. Pampero is really smooth and easy to drink. And that leather sack is cool.

I am far away from the experienced crowds here but I can say this ...
This brown very flavoured rum is more of value than the price of 35 euro (Belgium). It is a very strong rum with an alcoholic taste but the favours surronding the alcohol are complex. After every sip you can detect something different. the taste stays in your mouth for a very long time. after every sip it is getting stronger and stronger. For me this rum is a very big big winner considering the price statement. I would like to taste more rums like this one. Just buy and try it for yourselfs !!! Regards Frankie Vittorio

... given the many high ratings here.
To my taste the alcohol is too dominant in nose and aftertaste but the flavors are ok: a bit of vanilla, dry fruits, dark chocolate and wood. Not sweet and not too bitter, whereupon I wish it would be smoother. Sadly nothing special overall.

This rum has been produced since 1963. The brand is now part of Diageo.
It is around 4-7 years old, although it seems much older to the nose and palate.
Years ago I read that a measurement showed 10g added sugar. In any case, it doesn't seem too sweet to me and I don't find that annoying. The sweetness is perfect for my taste.

Nose: On the nose you can immediately notice that it comes from a column distillation. The dried fruits such as plums and grapes are always strongly pronounced in this procedure, they literally dominate the rum. Pampero also reminds me a lot of rum from Belize. I think it smells primarily of dried fruits, grapes and orage zests. I also smell burnt sugar. It's sweetness is darker than the caramel sweetness found in other rums (it's burned sugar). I also notice wet wood or barrels and orange zest (orange peel) in the background. That is very decent for a rum around 20 €.
If I stick my nose too deep into the glass, I notice that the rum is a bit alcoholic and earthy. Many who have drunk the rum complain about this. A sign for me that the rum should breeth longer,
the earthiness tells me that the rum was stored in old barrels. It seems like a rum between 12 and 14 years to me. At this point I recommend letting the rum breath in the glass for 1 hour.
When you have finished the rum you can leave the glass overnight. In the morning you can smell a bunch of dried fruits.

Taste: It starts off mildly for my palet (I can sip up to 70%) with burnt sugar, dried fruits (grapes, plums) and wood. I don't think it's too sweet. I believe that no more than 15g of sugar was added. A sharpness develops from the middle with a slight bitterness that comes from tannins. As the rum gets warmer in my mouth, I taste the grape seeds again very intensely, as well as wood combined with orange zest (this is the influence from the old barrels).
The finish brings out spiciness, I can taste burnt sugar, dried fruits and oak again. Due to the sharpness, the finish is not short, but neither is it excessively long.
The aftertaste lasts longer. I mainly notice dried fruits.

Conclusion: A decent rum at a low price that seems older than it is. I made also a cross tasting with 1992, 2019 and 2021 release. The 2019 is the best one... the worst ist the 92th. It's a little bit musty and has not that much dry fruits. The 2021 is more alcoholic and not that rich and complex.
I can unreservedly recommend this rum, it was my first one and after almost 400 rums I still like it (it's always in my bar). I think it's a bargain for the price of 20 Euro. If you like Spanish style rums go for it.
This rum has been produced for 58 years, I don't think it needs a confirmation from anyone. It's just a good rum.
This bargain gets 83 points.

First touch is sweet, brown sugar and caramel, next touch is deep long smoke of wood.
For me it´s too smoky.
