Very dark colour I presume from added caramel ? Typical honey sweet smell , bit of alcohol bite at the start but smoothes of quite quickly in the mouth. A nice finish and a very pleasant after taste. Hoping I ll enjoy more with each tasting. So 7.5 for the rum and 0.5 for the leather bag , nice touch.
Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva 40% Venezuela
Eye: Worn brownish copper
Nose: Pleasingly coy nose on this one at introduction. Smells a little too sweet and one dimensional to be refined and makes me think it is quiet young with the ambition to seem older than it is. Like a teenage boy with grandads perfume on. Kind of oily and thick which can be promising but the lack of edge raises a red flag for me. Then comes the compulsory butter scotch and caramel, some dried fruits, hazel and walnuts. Detect also margarine (that´s a first) and vanilla coke. It also reminds me of Versace Edt Pour Homme but I suspect I´ve bumped into someone with that fragrance on earlier today. It develops somewhat in the glass and after a while I love the smell. Nougat, some citrus like orange marmalade and grape fruit zest. Very nice, could smell this all night!
Mouth: Yes, very sweet. Oh, and it comes in waves. First a small swell of cool sweetness with some exotic fruits, then a slightly larger swell carrying dried fruits and nougat and finishes with a monster wave of embrowned butter and burnt sugar, molasses even. This is the fault in my humble opinion. It is very mellow throughout the whole palate and is evenly presented with its entire register of flavors. In that respect it is very well balanced. I like each and every element but it is just too sweet and sugary which in the long run is …boring. Taste good though.
Reaction: As usual I don´t have a clue of what I am drinking. Apart from the treacle-like sweetness it is rather gentle and cool which is an unusual but welcome feature. It is also anonymous and lack that individuality I do appreciate so much in 40%-ABV-and-above-spirits. After 30 minutes I don´t agree with myself about the age statement anymore. I feels older and more self-confident towards the end but it seem to have lost interest in itself. Like an I-am-what-I-am-attitude. Good stuff but a tad sweet and simple. Seems like a bargain taking the price into account, but again, when do I drink it?
Price: 289 SEK
Tasted: 2016, In a Riedel Sommelier Cognac XO glass at room temperature.
Good reviews here a some good references from my friends made me to buy this rum. But it was big disappointment. It bites in the nose, bites on the tongue and bites in the throat. Maybe it is just bad bottle, ti would not be my first experience that one bottle tastes different than another. But for now i am not recommanding this rum.
Definitely not smooth with strong alcohol taste. More suitable on the rocks
Retasted: rate 4->5, but still unsatisfiing experience. This rum is not good, taste is just flat and bity.
Found the last bottle at a liquor store in NY, so I figured it must be good if there's only one bottle left on the shelf. Interesting presentation in the leather sleeve, but this rum does not need a "hook" like this to gather attention. Nice bottle design, and the juice is quite dark. I let the rum sit in the glass before tasting, as some mentioned to let it breathe. Not a strong nose, somewhat sweet. Upon tasting, very mild oak taste, somewhat complex and nice finish.
Package in leather sack is very nice. Gratifying as a gift for someone. Surely will not be disappointed what is concealed inside bottle.
Definitely needs some time to breathe in a glass because first you are hammered with strong alcohol smell. After few minutes you can find there some sweet, oaky and vanilla aroma.
Taste is just little sweet, also vanilla oak and smoky tones. Burns just little and everything is well balanced.
Don't waste with this stuff for mixing wiht coke!
Sugar: 16 to 20 gpl. I bought this bottle primarily because of the packaging and thought for $29 this wouldn't be that good. I sure was wrong about price equals taste. Who knew that a 4 to 6 year blend of rums could be this good. In the glass it has a great aroma of brown sugar or fudge-caramel. Oak, vanilla and spices follow. It is a sweet and very smooth rum with a pleasant burn and agreeable aftertaste. Not overly complex, but so darned easy to drink. Even the ladies tried it and that's surprising. During my first glass I thought this tasted familiar, prompting me to pull out the Zacapa 23 and the Zacapa XO from the shelf. Sure enough this one is right in the middle of those 2 rums. Maybe the blender was working on Zacapa and Pampero the same week. Both brands are controlled by Diageo....so it makes sense. It's not a conspiracy, it's a deal. It doesn't matter as this is an outstanding bargain.
I will be sure to stock up on this rum the next time I find it.
Nice presentation in the leather sack which makes it stand out of other rums in the store.
The rum is very nice and super smooth.
Tones of brown sugar vanilla and oak.
I like it a lot but compared to other premium rums it is missing the X-factor, not disapointing but also not very special.
I would recomend this rum to a beginner because it is so smooth and easy to drink.
Super rum. that good! Smooth tasting, not to sweet, tastefull really good on the rocks or not if you like. Get your hands on a bottle!
This is a very well blended smooth rum, with a full very clasic rummy body. Letting it breath a bit in the glass removes the very faint alcohol taste that's there from the beginning. Great aftertaste, not much wood.
Bottle design and the leather pouch is a very good thing for those of you (like me!) who enjoy such things.
Clear dark bronze color with creamy legs. Astringent nose with a slight molasses, oaky, vanilla scent and a hint of tobacco. A little sharp on the pallet but a warm smooth burn. One of my early favorite rums. An excellent sipper for the price.
Good to share... And on the rocks it's nice not on my top list
This is a fun bottle to share with friends. It comes in a classic leather pouch which looks just cool as heck. The rum itself doesn’t quite live up to the expectation set by the presentation, but you can do worse. It is actually a decent sip. It has tobacco and strong oak tones but also carries a burn. Sometimes the oak and burn are a bit too strong for my liking but sometimes I am in the mood for that. It’s not Zafra level but it’s a great thing to grab for an evening with friends.
An enjoyable rum that can be drank on it's own or with a splash of Ginger ale. Highly recommend!
This is the bottle that got me into rum. Not the best in any way, but gives a good starting point for what school of rum to go for.
Seems to me like a lot of oak and caramel. Sweet but not too much. Would give 6.5 as I'm not sure whether this one is better then Dictador 12 or not. More complex then Dictador 12 I think.
Good rum that presents well in its leather bag. I always bring to parties. It looks good and just about everyone likes the taste. Personally I find it a bit on the fake sweet side.
This is truly wonderful tasting Rum. Full of deep of delicious flavours, sweet but not yukky and comes in an impressive presentation leather pouch. One of the best I have tasted so far, and a reasonable price, but sadly I feel it lacks that X factor to make it a truly exceptional Rum.
Had a glass neat. Wasn't to impressed about it. Not a lot of taste. Having a glass with coke now and that makes a lot of difference! Really nice to mix!!
