The Kill Davil Trinidad 1998 is a single cask rum from the Caroni Distillery, which was stored mostly continental for 18 years. The rum produced in column style is bottled in cask strength of 65.5% alcohol in a limited edition of 245 bottles, without dyes, sugar or filtration.

In the nose, the Caroni is immediately recognizable and it directly triggers a smile. I love that smell. Nice and dirty comes a certain sweetness. There is also a fruity part. Wood and a little caramel. Ashtray and some tar. With a little time in the glass, the rum becomes a little more balanced. On the palate, the rum is intense. The 65% pushes the aromas forward. A pleasant fruity sweetness is quickly captured by dirty notes. Tar and leather. But also wood and tannins. Everything is very complex and can be overwhelming when drinking. At the finish, the dirty note remains and wood, leather and some sweetness accompany the long finish. The aromas persist for a long time.

The Kill Devil Caroni 1998 is a fantastic rum. If you like dirty caroni, this is the right place for you. In addition, this bottling is even affordable. It is comparable to the Bristol 1997 but of course they are not the same. It is absolutely amazing and unique how the glass smells after drinking. Even the devil can't kill that dirty note.

Top.

Here we have a single cask Caroni, which is still available in Germany with 246 bottles (expert24). Bottled at a strength of 65.5%. It is 18 years old, partly tropical matured and was distilled in 1998. So we can look forward to a lot of dirt on the palate.

Smell: A slightly pungent scent escapes from the glass. This 1998 Caroni is dirty. It reminds me also of the Bristol 1997 at 61.5%. Sweetness from burnt sugar, some wood lacquer / rubber and wood dominate the smell. I don't notice a lot of fruit aromas, but the smell is still very tasty. The sweetness with leather and the wood aromas have a beguiling effect on me even if the rum is overall not very complex.
You can still smell tar and some dried fruits, but these are in the background and are more subtle. Deeper in the glass, the rum is a bit earthy and slightly greasy, like the Bristol Caroni.
It smells not very dirty for a 1998 Caroni. But it smells more intense than the 1997 Bristol Caroni.

Taste: It starts off slightly sweet, woody with burnt sugar and dried fruit. Immediately overwhelms you with earthy tar and gum aromas. Here a typical 1998 Caroni shows its dirty side. The rubber corresponds to the well-known car tires. Tannins also come up with pronounced bitter substances and the sharpness increases rapidly. I perceive barrel aromas with a little bourbon wood and the typical vanilla. The tannins are very present after several sips but go well with the overall composition. The leather comes up and becomes very dominant.
The finish is sharp and long, with tannins, wood, tar, some vanilla, lots of leather. Unfortunately I hardly notice any fruit.

Aftertaste: tar, tannins, wood, a lot of leather, mint, dried fruit

This is a rum for experienced palates. It appears rather reserved to the nose, then easily overpowers an unsuspecting beginner. Unfortunately, like the Bristol 1997, it is not very fruity. I was still able to enjoy it. For me, this is a very nice, strong caroni that I particularly appreciate because of the pronounced dirty notes.

The Powerful alcoholic scent brings to your nose an interesting an complex fruity bouquet. It’s a full proof: small sips and let it evaporate in your mouth. The fruity bouquet starts with sherry and tropical fruit. A final note of caramel before the alcohol kick. A nice surprise.

Very intense, superb mouthfeel, and yes - after the initial almost sherrycask-like notes mixed with the fruitiness of Caroni, you quickly get both oak and the outboard motor oil that Caroni is giving - but not too much. The balance is fabulous. Superb, robust and magnificent old dinosaur of a Caroni - a living legend.

Caroni typisch mit kräftiger vom Fass bestimmter Holz-Note. In der Nase noch leicht Süss.

Purchased a sample from Master of Malt for around £8.

It's a potent cask strength beast from kill devil aptly named of course as you dont want too many of these.

Tropical fruit and spice on the nose. Very oaky with a medium finish
