Quite light, herbs in the nose? Bourbon casks, then tropical wood from Indonesia. Red rice to ferment. Soft, round in the mouth. Balanced. Not complex, which is a pity maybe. Easy to sip so 8 minus, 7 is to harsh...

Naga, 'Double-Cask-Aged Rum of Indonesia', was a very pleasant surprise to discover, a truly excellent rum, superb to sip all by itself. Just the right amount of sweetness, and some nice vanilla and light spice with fruit tones, Naga is a rum with delicious balance and flavour richness. Well worth it.

From the company website, we learn that Naga is the serpent-spirit of the Indonesian islands, guarding the treasures of the earth. Naga is a product of Indonesia's great island of Java, where the molasses fermentation is apparently aided by yeast from malted Javanese red rice, giving Naga its special character. The rum is then aged in casks of teak - which the locals call jati - and then in oak bourbon casks for that just-right sweet finish. Very nice.

Le nez est d’abord marqué par des notes de sucre cuit et caramélisé. Ce côté brûlé nous amène à une mélasse bien sombre, épaisse et réglissée. Malgré quelques touches de vanille, c’est bien cette réglisse noire qui saisit, avec un marc de café bien noir lui-aussi, ainsi que des fruits à coque très torréfiés et même bien grillés.
L’aération assouplit un peu la direction prise par ce rhum. Son profil plutôt simple navigue entre la vanille et le sucre caramélisé, et le café devient noisette ou encore café au lait. Le bois toasté est enrobé de caramel, ainsi toutes les notes les plus sombres du premier nez s’arrondissent peu à peu.

La bouche est douce, sucrée et épaisse, avec des saveurs toujours simples de caramel et de vanille. La torréfaction saisit un court instant mais le caramel revient aussitôt, comme un miel un peu cuit. Le boisé est humide, il rappelle presque le papier, voire même le carton mouillé. Les épices sont légères, elles effleurent la langue, une petite céréale donne une impression de pain moelleux.

La finale est assez discrète, sans lourdeur, avec un côté fumé / grillé en toute fin.

Nose : Spicy, exotic fruit, sweet.
Mouth : Soft & spicy.
Final : Spicy, fruity, woody.
Naga Rum is produced in the north of the island of Java according to an ancestral method of Asian distilling: the fermentation of molasses is boosted by the addition of red Javanese malted rice yeast. This rum is an assemblage of distillates up to 7 years old: 52% in "old Indonesian pot Stills" at 65% and 48% in columns at 92 °. It is aged in Jati casks, a local exotic wood, then in bourbon casks.

This is very unusual rum. Its taste is quite different in comparation with caribean or south american rums. I recomend at least trying it, even you might not like it, because this is something you wont find in other rums.

Color: Mahagon

Smell: fruity. plums, banana, cocoa

Taste: its not as sweet as you would think. Its spicy, with something like mango or banana in taste. Surprisingly smooth.

Bien que ce rhum se distingue par une recette qui se rapproche du breuvage originel, le côté un peu suret de la levure de riz rouge utilisée lors de la fermentation, m'a laissé sur ma fin.
Suis pas très fan !

Rum tasting with my buddy in Tampere continued with Naga Rum. Nice bottle and label design. Mahogany color. Strong liquorice root mixed with mild oak to your nose and palate when neat sipped. Very mild burn at the end.

El color es claro, lo justo para su edad.
En nariz es muy prometedor, agradable, no alcohólico, dulce como toffee.
Pero en boca es totalmente decepcionante. Sinceramente no tiene nada que ofrecer. Muy suave y suntuoso para su grado alcohólico. Demasiado aterciopelado y meloso. Tampoco feo pero "sabe" a muy poco.

Really tought, spicy rum with tones of fruit, unconfortable aftertaste and full body. Not suits me.
