Maggie's Farm 50/50 Pineapple rum

Maggie's Farm 50/50 Pineapple

United States | Flavored

Maggie’s Farm 50/50 Pineapple rum, a dark rum which is made in the same fashion as the 50/50 Dark Rum with two key differences: before blending and aging, fresh pineapple meat is macerated in the Trinidadian rum for two weeks, and the White Rum is distilled with pineapple meat and bark.

I've found that this works wonders in a Rum Negroni and is pretty tasty neat or on the rocks. It has almost no sweetness and a large amount of pineapple flavor as well as a hint of astringency and a bit of vanilla.

Like everyone else, I can't help but compare it to Stiggins; and like everyone else, find it much less sweet, for better or worse. Presumably Plantation adds sweetner, and Maggie's Farm adds none or very little. Of course the sweetness of Stiggins hides any rough edges; this has a more complex flavor that I enjoy, but might be less approachable if you're just looking for a sweet shot. (But who shoots $40/bottle rum?)

The base is their 50/50 rum ("made in the traditional style of a Caribbean dark rum by blending and aging our own pot-distilled cane rum with an extra-aged molasses based, column-distilled rum from the Caribbean and re-age an additional 6-9 months to allows the flavors to marry"), with their own pot-distilled rum made here in Pittsburgh. To be frank, I'm not a huge fan of their 50/50-- it's not my style-- but the pineapple complements it wonderfully.

You should absolutely give this a try if given the opportunity. I just haven't figured out what to do with it yet... seems like it's begging for a cocktail (the distillery serves a "Maggie's Fancy" which mixes this with cardamom bitters and brown sugar simple syrup) but that seems like a lot of work when I've managed to go through half a bottle just quaffing it straight.

This will be a direct comparison to Stiggins Fancy...

This has a deeper pineapple smell that isnt as sweet on the nose or palate. It's like comparing the sweetness and flavor of Dry Curacao and Cointreau.

Compared to most mass produced pineapple rums, this is phenomenal. I just couldn’t help but compare it to plantation, which has a much better depth of flavor to it

Remember Astro Pop Suckers - those rocket-shape lolipops with cherry, passion fruit, and pineapple? The nose on this isn't quite that sweet, but it does bring back some childhood memories. It smells almost like a Riesling. The first sip is very smooth for a full 80-proof. The pineapple flavor is definitely there, but it doesn't hit you over the head. I enjoyed it on ice, and also tried mixing it with some Siesta Key Toasted Coconut, which was also very good. Could be featured in a cocktail.

Side note - this is a brand new expression, we were able to get a sneak peak. The image was taken from the distiller's twitter page.
