This was my favorite find from our visit to Pittsburgh. A classic dark rum that would make a great dark & stormy. Light creaminess on the nose with just a hint of caramel, gives way to a full flavor rum that will remind you of a molasses cookie.

Not overly sweet, which usually would bother me, but in this case it works really well. Kind of like an agricole, but not as strikingly earthy.

You can definitely taste the bajan rum as the star, but the white cuts it a bit and gives it a sharp edge that I like

Down the middle, caramel notes a bit of spice on finish, sippable

I can't put my finger on this - One second its sweet, and next second its grassy and dry. I enjoyed it, especially in some Tiki drinks, but haven't really formed a defined opinion of it. Will try again in the future. Bonus points for being from Pittsburgh.

This 50/50 Dark Rum is a good quality, fairly-structured blend. Right off the bat, from the appearance to the nose and palate, I see a lot of similarities with Demerara rums, and not necessarily Trinidadian rums (though to be fair, I have only experienced Scarlet Ibis and Angostura 7 year as far as TDL distillates go).

The appearance in the glass is a dark brown color, with an orange tinge; it has medium clarity and medium viscosity. It's apparent the 12 year old Trinidadian element of this blend provides the deep brown color.

On the nose, I get notes of molasses, red wine vinegar, vanilla frosting, plums, and tobacco leaves. It's quite interesting, with twists and turns from sweet (molasses, frosting) to bitter (vinegar, tobacco leaf) notes; at times it reminds me of the recent Holmes Cay Ten Cane release, with a briny yet fruity aroma (interestingly, that Ten Cane rum was aged 10 years and was cane juice-based).

Tasting the blend yields notes of brown sugar, baked spiced apples, cinnamon, and vanilla. As I mentioned above, there's a Demerara-like quality to this rum, but it is still a unique experience. However, it's a bit thin, and makes me feel like the Trinidadian element overpowers the Maggie's Farm distillate with its brown sugar and molasses notes, even though the blend is equally proportioned.

Speaking of thin, the finish is short and oaky, with further notes of baked cherries and plums; it ends on a dry, spicy, and slightly bitter note. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on how the imbiber chooses to enjoy this rum; personally, this seems like a great candidate to use in cocktails, but perhaps does not have the qualities I look for in a neat sipping experience.

Overall I think this is a fine craft rum from an American distillery that is focusing on transparent, high-quality products made from (mostly) American sugarcane. The blend itself has some nice high points, but none that soar too far above the clouds; just enough to make me want to further explore Maggie's Farm's other offerings. I personally would like to see their self-distilled rum aged and released, so I can have a halfway-decent comparison to the 50/50 blend. I am going to keep my eye on Maggie's Farm and other projects coming from Allegheny Distilling, and am eager to see they release in the future.

Bottle gifted to me by my friend Buck. Dark gold to light brown in color. Fairly odorless- faint chocolate. Chalky mouthfeel. Milk chocolate and Novocain to the flavor. Interesting berry flavor. This will be for mixing.

A whisky friend had this randomly in the back of his cabinet. Intrigued, I enjoyed the label more than the contents. It was ok, but as the rating suggests, sipping is probably not the way to go and so I imagine a mixed drink it might work well. In any case, I won't be picking up a bottle for myself.

I really enjoy their flagship white, hidden harbor, falernum and coffee liquer.

Just not this one. I can tell it's got a lot going on. Hints of agricole and molasses. Fruity. Just not my jam.
