I was looking for another expensive rum to try, so I thought I'd take a chance with this ~$400 rum as the first person to review it.
At first, I disliked it. At 68.5%abv, it simply burned my mouth, and I could barely taste it. But after a few sips, my mouth adjusted to it, and it turned out to be a really nice rum.
Smells and tastes of sweet sugarcane, leather, cinnamon, honey, oak, and vanilla, with a hint of smoke.
If it's too much for you at 68.5%abv, add a splash of water and/or ice and you'll easily taste the notes I describe above.
Pretty good, especially if you're a rum purist who doesn't like a lot of added flavors.
Enjoyed a bottle of Charbay Double Aged Rum while in St Louis. Unique bottle and label design. Dark golden color. Plenty of oak, alcohol, leather, some more alcohol, vanilla mixed in with more alcohol to the nose and palate when neat sipped. At 137 Proof you get a serious burn at the end of this experiment.
