I wasn’t expecting much from this bottom-shelf find I picked up just because of its more exotic country of origin, and when I opened the bottle at first, my nose told me I was right. The smell is almost pure alcohol, nothing enticing at all. But the taste belied my assumptions, as a complex oak-dominated smokiness led a well-balanced mouthfeel with down-the-middle sweetness. I was shocked at the complex character that immediately made me think of some specialty Scotches. The reason for a 7 instead of higher is that it’s therefore still less of a true rum taste, and honestly I still had to avoid smelling it. Plus, I mixed it and found it no better than Bacardi in a Coke somehow. This is not some amazingly crafted Agricole, but if you like bourbon flavors and give it a chance, its surprise is worth the low price point for sure.
