Routa 55% Enmore EMRC 1988
Nose: Classic RUM - in capitals. Sweet sultanas, spicy with cinnamon, clove, star anise, Chinese five spices, rich dark molasses, vanilla, burnt caramel.
Taste: All of the above with some no-sugar dark chocolate, raw cocoa bitterness, burnt caramel, Christmas cake, liquorice, leather, orange peel. Spicy with some oak tannins to support. BIG. (zero additives).
Finish: A touch of tar, oak tannins, dry, mouth-coating, leather. Vanilla and dry cinnamon stick. Burnt notes of caramel.
Enjoying three glasses of Routa 1988 after a tough European Grand Tour travel schedule. Very unique packing with a protection feature embedded in the stickers. Decent bottle and label design, but could be more Finnish to really pop out. EUR 195 per half a liter bottle is worth every penny. Liquorice, tar, leather, plenty of aniseed and dark un sweetened chocolate hits you straight in the taste buds. Such a smooth finish that Routa 1988 is better in my books than El Dorado 25y or the phenomenal Black Tot.
Many thanks to Joola69 for bringing this to me as part of a rare rum exchange.
I'm not as excited about this rum as other reviewers are. It has a lot of interesting flavors, but overall, it's just too dry and not very rum-like to me.
Smells and tastes of anise, leather, and tar. No rum sweetness, and not enough rum flavor for me to like it more.
