In a single sitting, I tried three Clairin brought to us by Velier. Like the others (Clairin Le Rocher and Clairin Vaval) it's a mix of Jamaican and Martinique/agricole styles. Clairin might not be to everyone's taste, but I'd urge every rum nerd to at least try a glass if they have the opportunity. (The reasonable price point should help.)
This one was the most balanced and subtle of the three. Mineral, a hint of green olive, and just a little funk to make it interesting.
After having some, I tried the rest ti' punch style (just a wee bit of lime and cane syrup), but I think it dulled the subtleties more than the burn. It would probably be good in a daiquiri, but I think a little wasted. This one is probably best straight.
During a Rumtasting at Nuremberg Village, I could taste this exciting Rum at his natural spirit. Very surprising and dirty...
First tried the 2015 version of this at the Manchester Rum Festival in 2017 and for me this was the best rum/rhum at the event.
Never tried a Clairin before, so was amased by the amount of flavour in this rhum.
Ordered a bottle of the 2013 once I got home and its very similar (to me). If this is the general quality of Clairins, I'll be buying loads of this stuff.

I like it as a change of pace. A little more viscous than other Clairin I’ve tried. Taste green olives. Enjoyed it.

Al naso è enorme con fermentati, esteri, frutta (ananas, melone cantalupo, mango surmaturo, fragola) e qualche agrume (pompelmo), salamoia, alghe dolci, olive e vegetali, inizialmente anche colla/solvente, ma poi svanisce.
Al palato è pungente e cremoso, in primo piano restano i fermentati seguiti dagli esteri, la frutta sentita al naso, formaggio, umami, vegetale, sapidità/salamoia, cioccolato bianco, pepe e una nota lontana di affumicatura. Nel complesso è secco e nonostante tutti questi aromi mantiene una rotondità disarmante e un abv ottimo, ma che avrei preferito più alto. Ricorda in un certo senso il Rivier Antoine. Nel bicchiere vuoto fermentati.

Not being fans of agricole we were concerned this was low on the scales before we tried but actually pleasantly surprised. Rated 7/10 for an agricole - so high praise, but not the equivalent of a 7/10 for a dark or aged rum. Grassy and vegetal on the nose and neat remains vegetal in the tasting but add some water to it and it opens up nicely with spicy tones. Perhaps a little salty and oily on the medium finish. About £50 retail when it came out, not our normal rum but enjoyable.

Smell - agricole, grassy, lemon, vegetal perhaps slightly yeasty tang
Taste - massively vegetal on the palate with spicy tones
After Taste - spicy and salty with an oily coat
2020 Harvest at 55.2%. This is a serious spirit from Haiti. Super sugarcane forward. Lots of grass, green tea, lemon and other citrus. Great proof at 110 too. Excellent mouth feel and long finish. Very complex.
Highly recommended and I will certainly rebuy, as well as try other Clairins. There are several to choose from in the NY market.
