I had just a sample so this is just a first impression, but I don’t think I will be digging deeper into it.
It’s produced by the distillery Espritus in Monterrey, Mexico. Pixan is their only brand. Pixan is Mayan and means ‘Spirit which gives life’.
The rum is said to be produced from molasses in a double column still and then aged for up to 8 years in American ex-bourbon barrels.
From nose to finish, which is medium long, it’s possible to recognize vanilla, fruits and herbal notes.
Can not really say what it is due to, but this rum does not appeal to me.
Picture: My emptied sample.
Triple bof.
Mexico is of course mostly associated with tequila, which they are also great at producing. Mexican rum is however more unknown and this bottle might not be the best entry for Mexican rum.
Nose: Pineapple, oak, vanilla, caramel and banana
Taste: Butterscotch, apricots, oak, vanilla and some light spice, that ends in a sweet medium aftertaste.
Overall: This rum is a bit to sweet for me. There is hints of a good rum there, but the sweetness steals the show and hides the qualities of the rum, which is sad.
Medium sweet rum with caramel and citrus, however bit short with too sweet aftertaste
Too much caramel and cinnamon in my opinion. However, it does not taste like a fireball so that is always positive. These two flavors hide the oak and other flavors so that is too bad.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Verbranntes mexikanisches Früchtchen / Burnt Mexican fruit

out of 10
Rich amber with copper reflections in the glass.
In the nose a delicious fruit salad of tropical fruits with caramel sauce and an espresso. In the background mossy woody tones play with medicinal smoky scents.
Sweet on the palate but not so sweet and somewhat unstructured. Tart caramel, burnt tropical fruits, strongly roasted coffee try to outdo each other.
In the aftertaste something "fiery, this funny medically smoky something and sticky lips remains behind.
Mexican rum is not my thing, but this rum surely finds its friends.
