Myers's Original Dark rum

Myers's Original Dark

Jamaica | Dark | 40% ABV

Myer’s Original Dark Rum is a blend of up to nine different rums of various ages, all of which are distilled using Jamaica's typical production method: pot-stills. The Original Dark Rum is slightly unique in Jamaica however, because some of the molasses used earlier in the process is added back in after distillation.

Myers rum has been produced since 1879 and named after its founder, Fred Myers.

Myers's is one of my favourite mixing rums. It is also one of the very few rums that I do like a lot, but that I do not enjoy neat so much. I find it a bit on the harsh side for neat sipping. But a bit of water and ice help a lot and it is sippable if that is for some reason necessary. But the strength of Myers's is as a mixing rum.

Alcohol is clearly present in Myers's and that is one factor in that harshness. Another one is a tarry and somewhat liquorice-like note. I think others describe it as "medical", which I can also agree with. Otherwise, quite a bit of funk, some honey, rich molasses. Also some smokey notes with a salty zest to it. Ironically, this is one rum that I might like better if it was a little bit sweeter. But since adding sweetness is one of the easiest things to do - absolutely no problem here.

But I hope that it remains unchanged forever, since it is so great as a mixer. And there seems to be nothing that could replace it. Myers's goes incredibly well with fruit juices or ginger ale or ginger beer. My favourite rum for a Dark and Stormy style drink. Also absolutely great with just plain pineapple or orange juice (of any quality).

Overall, I like it very much and the price is good. Not that easy to find in Germany though, for whatever reason.

Unique and irreplaceable. Great stuff.

This tastes like whisky and I hate whisky. I tried to drown the flavor with some orange drink, which I love mixing with Light out Gold Rum, but that just highlighted the smoky funk of this rum.

A normal dark rum, nothing special about the flavour and not really smooth enough to drink straight.

Neat.. Nope, but this stuff is excellent in a variety of Foofoo drinks. Good rum N coke too!

Obviously there is a reason why people drink so much Rum and Coke and the reason is that there are so many Rums that are made for it -like this one

I was introduced to this as it was poured on top of a white rum stone sour cocktail in a round glass with crushed ice.Don't forget to garnish with a cherry to make a tasty rum swizzle. The dark Myers was notably tasty the first time I tried it 25 years ago as I was sucking the crushed ice out of the bottom of the glass. It was my first exposure to dark rums.It certainly has a unique flavor. On its own it's fine to drink with a bit of a mixer. I always keep a bit of this old friend around the house to use in those emergencies when I have run out of richer darks. It's usually available on the shelf of most liquor stores. That bumps it up a notch in my view.
