Myers's Original Dark

Jamaica | Dark | 40% ABV

Myerโ€™s Original Dark Rum is a blend of up to nine different rums of various ages, all of which are distilled using Jamaica's typical production method: pot-stills. The Original Dark Rum is slightly unique in Jamaica however, because some of the molasses used earlier in the process is added back in after distillation.

Myers rum has been produced since 1879 and named after its founder, Fred Myers.

Myers's is one of my favourite mixing rums. It is also one of the very few rums that I do like a lot, but that I do not enjoy neat so much. I find it a bit on the harsh side for neat sipping. But a bit of water and ice help a lot and it is sippable if that is for some reason necessary. But the strength of Myers's is as a mixing rum.

Alcohol is clearly present in Myers's and that is one factor in that harshness. Another one is a tarry and somewhat liquorice-like note. I think others describe it as "medical", which I can also agree with. Otherwise, quite a bit of funk, some honey, rich molasses. Also some smokey notes with a salty zest to it. Ironically, this is one rum that I might like better if it was a little bit sweeter. But since adding sweetness is one of the easiest things to do - absolutely no problem here.

But I hope that it remains unchanged forever, since it is so great as a mixer. And there seems to be nothing that could replace it. Myers's goes incredibly well with fruit juices or ginger ale or ginger beer. My favourite rum for a Dark and Stormy style drink. Also absolutely great with just plain pineapple or orange juice (of any quality).

Overall, I like it very much and the price is good. Not that easy to find in Germany though, for whatever reason.

Unique and irreplaceable. Great stuff.

I like it. It is definitely not a sipping rum to me. Works very well in any mixed drink though. Cheers!

The standard for the industry. Great as a floater is most mixed drinks and stand alone in a dark and stormy. Try it with cola too.

but it does make a passable dark and stormy. You get what you pay for, if your only going to mix rum then this crap isn't such a bad way to go. If I can't sip it I'm not a fan. Reserve this for your timid fruit drink friends.

In Vietnam (of all places). It was hot and very humid. A beer went hot before it could be consumed, but one of these on ice surprisingly eased the discomfort of the humidity and heat. Sipping it slowly over ice, the heat and the humidity, no longer seemed too much to bear. In fact, all seemed to be as it should.
On a recent trip to Hong Kong, I found it very cheaply, in a Local neighbourhood grocery store. Bargin! and once more the heat and humidity seemed to be less uncomfortable with a Myers on the rocks.

There is nothing really wrong with this except the flowery after taste. Nice molasses taste and a bit of a gentle burn , reminds me of Black Heart navy rum. Would make a good mixer im sure.

I remember when this was one of the more exotic rums that were available. At the time I liked it pretty well with coke, but I sure am glad things progressed

really great for a hearty rum and coke but less is more when mixing this otherwise it turns to a glass of syrup real quick

Myers's Original Dark Rum van Jamaica is een prima dark rum voor in cocktails met die typische Jamaicaanse funk. Lekker.

I'm not quite sure why every restaurant or bar stocks this as a "good dark rum" when requested for my drink. My guess would be price only because it would not make it as a "top shelf" rum on taste alone. Very overpowering taste, to me it leaves a bad aftertaste if done straight up and only works in overly sweet mixes like Pina Coladas. I drink only when it's all they have. Never buy it for my shelf.
