Myers's Original Dark

Jamaica | Dark | 40% ABV

Myer’s Original Dark Rum is a blend of up to nine different rums of various ages, all of which are distilled using Jamaica's typical production method: pot-stills. The Original Dark Rum is slightly unique in Jamaica however, because some of the molasses used earlier in the process is added back in after distillation.

Myers rum has been produced since 1879 and named after its founder, Fred Myers.

There is a reason this rum is still popular. It is a nice rum, which I like to drink with coke. But it sets the standard for other dark rums to aspire to.

Not bad but not great. Was going on the rocks. Would likely order again.

Nice oak taste with some complexity and a good sweet-bitter balance. I enjoyed it straight and the alcohol taste wasn't too strong.

Myers's is one of my favourite mixing rums. It is also one of the very few rums that I do like a lot, but that I do not enjoy neat so much. I find it a bit on the harsh side for neat sipping. But a bit of water and ice help a lot and it is sippable if that is for some reason necessary. But the strength of Myers's is as a mixing rum.

Alcohol is clearly present in Myers's and that is one factor in that harshness. Another one is a tarry and somewhat liquorice-like note. I think others describe it as "medical", which I can also agree with. Otherwise, quite a bit of funk, some honey, rich molasses. Also some smokey notes with a salty zest to it. Ironically, this is one rum that I might like better if it was a little bit sweeter. But since adding sweetness is one of the easiest things to do - absolutely no problem here.

But I hope that it remains unchanged forever, since it is so great as a mixer. And there seems to be nothing that could replace it. Myers's goes incredibly well with fruit juices or ginger ale or ginger beer. My favourite rum for a Dark and Stormy style drink. Also absolutely great with just plain pineapple or orange juice (of any quality).

Overall, I like it very much and the price is good. Not that easy to find in Germany though, for whatever reason.

Unique and irreplaceable. Great stuff.

Intense dark spice. Nearly undrinkable neat. Harsh on the rocks. A bit rough, even with coke. ...but nothing better with ginger beer.

Further exploring Jamaican rums Myers's is a must try. And the more rums I try from Jamaica the less I understand the phrase 'typical Jamaican' as the rums on this island can be very far apart in taste and style. This one seems to stand on its own, just like e.g. Smith & Cross.

It has a strong scent of molasses, burnt caramel and herbs (as used in bitters) with only a modest part of Jamaican funk in there. On the palate it is very molasses forward and very herbal; it reminds me a bit of Fernet Stock, the Czech cousin of the famous Italian bitter Fernet Branca. Myers's has definitely a medicinal vibe to it with a rather bitter aftertaste that lingers on quit a bit.

It is not a mellow rum; it is so close to harsh that it is only just at the brink of being a comfortable sip. Bottled at the modest ABV of 40% it almost makes the earlier mentioned Smith & Cross (bottled at 57% ABV) a mellow drinking experience.

It is just a matter of getting used to as my first glass of the bottle was a bit of a shock and now, halfway through the bottle, it has actually become a really nice sip when I am in the mood for a herbal and bitter experience. Great for cold and dark days and at a very modest price this is one of those 'out of tune' rums that has probably earned a permanent place in my cabinet.

A great mixer with an authentic rum flavour which comes through. Underrated imho.

Tmavý chuťově velmi výrazný a hutný rum. Samotný se dá taky ale , ideální do koktejlů. Nesedne každému.

This has a strong molasses smell and really hits the spot in a cocktail. Lots of funky flavors, which I hear is typical of Jamaican rums. I think I'm in love.
