Myers's Original Dark

Jamaica | Dark | 40% ABV

Myer’s Original Dark Rum is a blend of up to nine different rums of various ages, all of which are distilled using Jamaica's typical production method: pot-stills. The Original Dark Rum is slightly unique in Jamaica however, because some of the molasses used earlier in the process is added back in after distillation.

Myers rum has been produced since 1879 and named after its founder, Fred Myers.

Famous for being THE Plunter's Punch ingredient but also for mediocre MaiTais it does its job there but that's about it. Not really tasty as a sipper but a cheap alternative to the real good dark ones like a Wood's or a Lemon Hart. I don't use it at home but have been given worse in bars so it's ok...

This has been a staple of my home bar for YEARS! It tastes good straight (fairly smooth, lots of molasses, because, again, it's dark, it's supposed to taste like molasses!) and I used to drink it with either orange juice or pineapple juice pretty regularly, "...when I wore a younger man's clothes." It's not a "great" rum but it is a very good one and it works well in most mixed drinks as it is at least one of the best truly DARK rums that I've had. There are definitely others that rival it but it's a winner regardless.

It should always be kept on hand when having guests over for cocktails. Making a Mai Tai? No problem! Banana Colada? You bet! Eggnog? Absolutely! Planter's Punch? Look no further! Even a Dark and Stormy...BUT WAIT!, where's the spice?...It's called St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram Liqueur and if you enjoy rum cocktails, this should already be in your house and can be used to make Myers spicy! If you don't know, now ya know! I absolutely consider this to be an essential bottle in my home bar. I would recommend buying it immediately if you ever drink a cocktail at home and honestly, it's better straight than its rating suggests (5.7...? Really??? Silver Chair Coconut and Ron de Jeremy Spiced are rated around or above it...seriously?)

Love it for Drinking and Cooking. Fried banana with Orange Juice and Myers reduction is my favorite ice cream topping.

Note: I'm a sipper. My opinion is based on sipping characteristics.

This tastes so bad, it is only fit for chumps who drink Jägermeister. Since I am not that type of person, the bottle went straight down the sink after first two sips.

This is the most gawd-awful substance to ever assail my palette. Other reviewers led me to believe I was in for a treat. This nasty liquor tastes like burnt wood! I'll stick with Flor de Caña

This is not a straight sipper. Fantastic for mixing in your favorite rum based cocktails, but lacking in enough complexity to stand solo. Which is fine! Different spirits play different rolls. Hell, this would be great in a split base tropical drink such as a painkiller with some Smith and Cross. Must have for your at home bar if not for versatility alone.

I love that it smells sweeter than it tastes - vanilla, molasses and tobacco notes, with a warm, full flavour and a hint of citrus tang. A flavourful mixing rum that can be enjoyed all by itself.

No longer a standard in all grocery liquor departments apparently. Should be, though. A fine enough Jamaican rum. Not strong funk on the nose but plenty on the palate. When all else fails, 4 ounces of pineapple juice and 2 of Fred’s elixir, and life is good. Let’s all drink to Fred Myers. He deserves it.

For a reasonably priced rum with a touch of that lovely Jamaican funk, Myers can't be beat.

Nose is mild, moderately redolant of overripe fruit and molasses. Not a lot of alcohol whiff. On the palate, it's surprisingly smooth, lightly sweet, and there's a lack of harshness that is pretty remarkable for this price tier (and for such a ubiquitous rum).

That said, it's not the beautiful sipping pot of Haut gout that other Jamaicans are. Still, if I lost my job and were on a budget...bingo!

I bought mine in a plastic bottle and I'm not sure if that was the problem, but it tasted off when sipped straight. That being said, off your making a mai-tai this is the rum
