Myers's Original Dark rum

Myers's Original Dark

Jamaica | Dark | 40% ABV

Myer’s Original Dark Rum is a blend of up to nine different rums of various ages, all of which are distilled using Jamaica's typical production method: pot-stills. The Original Dark Rum is slightly unique in Jamaica however, because some of the molasses used earlier in the process is added back in after distillation.

Myers rum has been produced since 1879 and named after its founder, Fred Myers.

Always keep some on hand for mixing. Probably my favorite dark mixing rum. Little harsh for straight sipping.

Ahh man, just got done a bottle of single still El Dorado and then opened this. Im reminded why I stay away from midrange Jamaican rum. That acetone vegetative smell hits you and you think you are in for a double-proof night of chaos. However it wasn't too bad and is mellowed with the molasses at the end. As with most Jamaican rum, its not without that vegetative funk.

In the bottle from the gas station down your street. Pours brown. Because I don’t recall ever drinking this neat before, I must admit that I’m pleasantly surprised. Classic Jamaican funk, but plenty of it. Up front burnt sugar sweetness. Finishes with a gullet burn, not a mouth burn.

Celkem dobře pitelný rum s tóny čokolády a koření. Navoněný s dlouhým koncem.

Fine if in a bind. Like a lot of the lower end rums it’s ok if you want to mix it and no one is watching

Caramel, molasses oak and a bit roasty burnt nose. Dark strong burnt alcohol start and body. Warming and medium burn on the finish with a strong nasty after taste… would be great for the mic with a coke or something but for a normal drinking it is not very good… Diplomatico Reserva or Plantation 20th anniversary are just more superior for this

I actually love this rum. It’s flavorful, deep, well rounded. Great flavors you’d expect from a Jamaican rum without being too funky (I love funk but some don’t). Can drink straight but honestly it really shines in tiki drinks. The gripe I have is that they switched their 750ml bottle to plastic. Sorry but I can’t get behind that. Not only is plastic toxic in a lot of ways, for us and the environment, but it’s also just got such a cheap feel to it. Now I have found it in glass but a majority of places sell the 750 in a plastic bottle now. It shouldn’t be offered in plastic. Period.

Sipping this absolutely neat. straight. i never mix my rums and i would not mix this. don't fall for the bad reviews of novices ranting about it being too harsh (on the rocks?!) why? would anybody take a good rum and dilute it with tasteless frozen water? of course it would taste bad. it's the perpetual example of bad taste.
now to my Myers's Rum experience itself:
My liter bottles arrived without many great expectations for it other than being a volume sipper for a fair price. i read large portion of the reviews on rumratings and was expecting a harsh experience fitting for a low end rum. and well. this is just unfair.
Tasting Notes:
Looks: Beautiful reddish terracotta colour in my snifter, looks as mixed with artisan pigments!
Nose: Molasses, suspicious sweet poisonous paint thinner, Yeast, Chocolate cake, Cherry Wiּśniak(!)
Palate: Dominant with Cherry Deep and pleasantly warm expanding attack into every cavity. he is a gentleman, not a low rank pirate, knows how to use gun powder but will slash your tongue if not careful, the famous Captain still has a lesson to learn from him. the perfect desert. i have it next to my yogurt after dinner. after scotch. the emphasis is on sweet and rich chocolate with hint of coconut fading away leaving that overwhelming sweetness. i am diabetic. i can drink this. it's a miracle.
Finish: Medium, Sweet, Lingering. fading slowly. but not mature enough to leave a unique impact beyond of the classic dark rum.
i rate it with 8. as i know it could get a 9 if left maturing in casks for few years more. and perhaps a 9.5-10 if matured even as twice.
Lesson: Beware of cheap reviewers. words have a price which is not affordable to them.

Very good rum for its class! It's a black blended rum from Jamaica that has the usual caramel and molasses notes. A slight bitterness on the aftertaste as well.

Not quite up to sipper-level, but functions very well as a mixer in various cocktails. It's a staple on my liquor shelf.
