Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

It burns like nothing I have tasted before - instantly. I must admit thought most of the stuff I sampled was in the higher price range. It is anything but smooth. And I was left under the impression that XO does exactly that: create a smoothness and character. But also on the character front there is nothing to write home about.
All in all it tastes almost like a whiskey.
If you want to say anything positive about it: I guess this is the one product with the least amount of sugar in it.
A little vanilla and chocolate taste. Nice colour.
Has a stronger finish than others I have tried. The slight Moca flavor adds to it enjoyment
Paid $49.99 in NYC. A really nice nose, rich dark color. This is definitely a rum with a fuller body. I read the label and found out it is 43% alcohol, which explains the full body. Not as sweet as the Plantation XO, but quite enjoyable neat.
Good choice as a daily use, or standby rum. Good nose, smooth on the palate, nice finish. Good sipping rum, or top-shelf mixed drink ingredient. If drinking it neat, I'd recommend letting it breathe 20 minutes or so, brings the scent out more, with less "burn" in the nose.
Très bon, mais rien d'original. Bon rapport qualité-prix. Bon seul, ou pour mixer.
Very good, but nothing original. Good value for money. Good alone, or to mix.
First time I had this I drunk it straight. Very nice. Best one in my cabinet so far, I am most drawn to spiced rums and I really enjoyed this one.
My benchmark for any rums, at pretty much any price point (with a few exceptions...). It's a very complex spirit, and only gets better at each experience. Beautful balance between the spiceness and sweetness. Very highly recommended!
You can tell its an well aged high quality rum. One of the dryer rums I have tried. It is not the best i have come across but i prefer it to the overly sweet rums like zaya and plantation xo.
Well balanced sweetness, taste of molasses and toffee, afterburn okay.
As for almost every rum, let it breathe in the glass. Smell is good.
Mount Gay is the oldest brand of rum produced to date, so I credit a history too.
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

MGXO has a super nice balance of dry, smokey, sweet, and oaky barrel flavor. There are hints of marshmallow vanilla along with chocolate, leather, and oak. Some subtle dried cherries and molasses flavor as well. I'm a bourbon fan which may be why I like this so much. There is a noticeable complexity of flavors it has besides just sweetness. There is a wonderful dry element to this one and I prefer it on the rocks at 43% alcohol. Extremely happy with this and will definitely be buying again. Update: coming back to this was difficult at first, I have tried so many "premium" sugary rums since and I couldn't appreciate it the way I used to. Over a few sessions of sipping at first it was just too hot and I could only taste the alcohol, then I added a little bit of water and time to the equation. After breathing and a dab of water I was able to recollect my initial love for this rum with its natural dry fruit/molasses sweetness and smooth finish. It's notably smoother on the finish than Doorly's 12 year and I can say that for sure now.
