Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

I had high hopes for this one and this is definitely a good rum....if you like scotch. Really tried to like it but I am simply nota scotch fan. The nice sugars are making it bearable but there it stops for me. Let's see what my dad says when he tries this one as he loves Scotch. Maybe also rum after tasting the XO. :-)
This is an interesting rum. The smell is really wooden..the taste starts not too sweet. Then there is an alcoholburn which i don't mind, followed by a long wooden en peppery finish.
For good sipping rum, hard to beat from a price basis
zacapa and diplomatico are better but more $$

Refined yet bites a bit. Used it in the Blood and Sand recipe.
Great alternate to have some fun in switching and comparing
I will start this review by saying that I do have a sweet tooth and I am also not a big fan of scotch (a comparison to which a lot of the other reviews make).
Mount Gay XO is deep in colour and strong in flavour. I find it to be fairly spicy, with caramelised fruit and a woody / oaky flavour to it.
For me it is a little harsh and I find the taste of alcohol a bit too much. As a consequence I have been drinking it with ice in and don't really enjoy it without.
Once finished, I will be in no rush to go out and replace the bottle I presently have on the go as there are other rums that I much prefer but despite this I have given it a 7. After all, it is by no means a supermarket bottle that's only good for mixing and for some, with less of a sweet tooth that me, is clearly a trusty favourite.

A staple in my rum cabinet. Great value and a great taste.
A little vanilla and chocolate taste. Nice colour.

It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

MGXO has a super nice balance of dry, smokey, sweet, and oaky barrel flavor. There are hints of marshmallow vanilla along with chocolate, leather, and oak. Some subtle dried cherries and molasses flavor as well. I'm a bourbon fan which may be why I like this so much. There is a noticeable complexity of flavors it has besides just sweetness. There is a wonderful dry element to this one and I prefer it on the rocks at 43% alcohol. Extremely happy with this and will definitely be buying again. Update: coming back to this was difficult at first, I have tried so many "premium" sugary rums since and I couldn't appreciate it the way I used to. Over a few sessions of sipping at first it was just too hot and I could only taste the alcohol, then I added a little bit of water and time to the equation. After breathing and a dab of water I was able to recollect my initial love for this rum with its natural dry fruit/molasses sweetness and smooth finish. It's notably smoother on the finish than Doorly's 12 year and I can say that for sure now.
