Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.
MGXO has a super nice balance of dry, smokey, sweet, and oaky barrel flavor. There are hints of marshmallow like vanilla along with chocolate and some leather n oak. Some subtle dried cherries and molasses flavor as well. I'm a bourbon fan which may be why I like this so much. There is a noticeable complexity of flavors it has besides just sweetness. There is a wonderful dry element to this one and I prefer it on the rocks at 43% alcohol. Extremely happy with this and will definitely be buying again. Update: coming back to this was difficult at first, I have tried so many "premium" sugary rums since and I couldn't appreciate it the way I used to. Over a few sessions of sipping at first it was just too hot and I could only taste the alcohol, then I added a little bit of water and time to the equation. After breathing and a dab of water I was able to recollect my initial love for this rum with its natural dry fruit/molasses sweetness and smooth finish. It's notably smoother on the finish than Doorly's 12 year and I can say that for sure now.
I have seen some negative ratings for this rum in a few places; I have to say, I was surprised.
This is some tasty stuff!!
If it wasn't for the finish which is really dry and slightly bitter and tends to linger longer then i would prefer; this would be an 8 or 9.
This is what rum should taste like! A quite affordable sipper that's not sweet, yet retains a fruity quality. The rum against which all rum should be measured!
edited to add sugar test results- 0g
Picked it up on an airport deal. Was very disappointed. Not even good enough for a evening sipping rum. Used it as a mixer. Too bad, nice bottle, nice color.
nez doux, caramel
The epitome of Barbados rums, generally viewed as one of the best in the world. Complex, rich, spicy, NO added sugar - everything a great aged rum should be.
I surprisingly didn't enjoy my first tasting of Mount Gay Extra Old Rum. It came through very spicy with a long and tart finish. There wasn't the smoothness I typically associate with aged rums, but moreso a bite typical to gold rums. For now I'm sticking with 4/10 until further review.
I Like it. It's Strong, but Also very mild. Not very sweet, but Just about enough. For me this is a good rum to compare other rums to. I'm personally a bigger fan of sweeter rums. But this one is a very good rum!
Better than the average. Something missing to gain a "9". The smoked taste maybe confused me. I will try it again and i will rate one more time
First of all - I like sweet rums. Not Diplomatico sweet, but let's say I like them when they are a bit sweetened. This rum, when actually not sweetened, really surprised me though...
Mount Gay Black Barrel was a bit underwhelming for me. Pretty bland and not memorable. And so on one side, I was sceptical when reaching for the XO, on the other I was looking forward to it. When I poured the first glass of this rum, I was struck by the smell of alcohol and a combination of some wood and little bit of fruits. The taste was good, but actually not that great. Well good for me I poured some more! The second and third glass were surprisingly sweet for a non-sweetened rum. The alcohol harshness faded away and I was left with a nice, decently sweet rum with just the right ammount of complexity. TIP: Let the rum sit for a while after pouring. Let it "open" and the smell and taste of alcohol will go away.
Like I said, I like sweet rums and this is not actually a "sweet" rum, since there shouldn't be any sugar added. But when you let the rum sit for a while, you'll get a nice quality product worth a buy. Miles better than the Black Barrel. This rum won't be my "go to" rum, but when I get tired of all the sugar in the other rums, I will pour some of this.
Heard a lot of the rum that is downright hyped in the forums / reviews because Mount Gay doesn't use additives. For this reason I was very excited to try it.
It has no added sugar, but is still moderately sweet. Basically, I don't care whether the sweetness comes from the sugar syrup or from the storage. It only has to match the overall taste.
Scent: vanilla, caramel, wood, some fresh fruit, spice.
Flavor: vanilla, caramel, wood, some fruit
Typical Barbados rum taste. The Plantons XO goes also in that direction.
However, has a more intense vanilla + coconut aroma.
For € 35 that's ok. I don't see anything special in it, it doesn't stand out.
Conclusion: price-performance ratio ok, fragrance ok, taste ok.
Good standard Barbados rum.
Duft: Vanille, Karamell, Holz, etwas frische Frucht, Würze.
Geschmack: Vanille, Karamell, Holz, etwas Obst dabei
Typischer Barbados Rum Geschmack.
Fazit: Preis-Leistung ok, Duft ok, Geschmack ok.
Guter Standard Barbados Rum.
Ok, it’s still not cheap but such a good rum, full flavoured and free of additives. Next step up is the Four Square Sixty Six rum.
Not worth writing home about. Good for mixed drinks but not rich enough as a sipper
So, i have a bottle that is like 13 years old, so my review is based on that (1 Litre btw) and not on its recent descendant. Mount Gay people say that the juice is the same but i d be a bit sceptical. If it is the same, if you re looking for a good, affordable aged Rum, look no further. Great doesnt do it justice, insert a more fancy word.
Nose is molasses, vanilla, cocoa, oak
Palate is sharp in the begining but smoothens out, with vanilla leading and followed by fruit like plums and cherries and then bourbon oak finally making its appearence, giving you an oaky finish. This oaky finish could be a bit unpleasant to some so you could rate it 1 down.
Could drink this rum every day and it's nice that its price tag is where it is xD Hard to find a better quality/money ratio.
I had many trips to Cuba and always enjoyed Havana Club 7 yo. Up until now I did not try anything else except Cuban rum. Once I've brought from there Santiago de Cuba 11yo and have found it so smooth and delicius compared to HC. Since then I've discovered world is full of different rums ). Had tried 12 of them so far. And I will rate them comparing to HC as the base rated 6.
Very smooth and supports that relaxing moment when enjoying a lovely rum
Nice and good to deink with friends. The favor is nothing special but always it is a good choice un the Island.
I like the smell of it . But the taste does not agree with my tastebods.
I only bought this as it was on special offer. I had previously tried Mount Gay "Black Barrel" and was totally underwhelmed by it, very mediocre to say the least. This stuff however, is in another league altogether. A myriad of wonderful flavours, a lovely after burn, but in no way harsh, this is "real" Rum. I would definitely buy this again.
Mount Gay - brand in coming from Barbados and its most oldest operating Rum distillery at the moment since 1703. You can find this year on the every bottle. But Mount Gay was not original brand ‘name’. It was renamed in 1801 from ‘Mount Gilboa’ in honor after
John Gay Alleyne death, who was business manager and latter lead company. Today ‘Mount gay distilleries Ltd’ produces also rum with old brand name - Mount Gilboa.
But now let’s come back to Mount Gay XO. This one is blend of different rums aged from 8 to 15 years. And don’t forget about double pot still distillation.
Color: beautiful deep amber color. But very clean, you can easily see all details through glass.
Nose: spicy, honey, molasses
Palate: very warm, little bit spicy, touch of wood and oak notes. Smoky and heavy aftertaste.
Surprised! How is this possible? Something called “gay” tasted duch great? I will never refuse cheers with this Gay 👍
To make a long story short, this is a perfection. Extremely well balanced, not too dry, not too sweet. Toffi and caramel on one side and wood & leather on the other. A touch of overripe fruit (banana) which reminds you it is rum. At this price level there is no competition however it has something in common with Appleton Estate 12 Rare Blend. I love both. Must have.
This is an incredibly dry rum that would be the perfect choice for whisky drinkers trying out rum for the first time. I like this one but i don't find it incredibly interesting. It does make a nice change from all the super sweet rums though.
