Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

This rum has a bit of a whiskey taste to it. If you like whiskey and want to get into rum this could be the pick for you. Not for me though.
From the colour you would think about a dry high quality spirit and by taste you would not be dissappointed. Firstly its quite a strong one maybe because of the 43%. Smell: dried fruits and banking spicies.Taste: tones of coconut and wood. Perfect for experienced rum lover.
Mount Gay Extra Old rum has a rich amber color with a reddish tint. The aroma is quite strong and expressive, with notes of banana, ripe apple, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, orange peel, caramel. The taste is bright, not too soft and even somewhat scalding (although I would not call it coarse), slightly sweet, with notes of spices and dried fruits.
The finish is long lasting, with notes of vanilla / oak. Overall, a good, very interesting rum.
Strong and smooth with a nice touch of sweetness. Perfect for a casual drink if youβre looking for something nice
I managed to find the oldest bottle, with the Barbados depiction thereupon. Greatly balanced, rich taste, pleasant burn, crisp and satisfying. One of the finest drinks that i've ever tasted out there, period. I followed the suggestions with coconut-water ice-cubes and it was okay, but i still prefer it neat.
I also managed to get a hold of its evolution, by Allen Smith, the black box one with golden letters. This felt way better, even though it was like stronger, dryer, harsher, with more powerful burn. This one i liked much better and prefer clearly. With coconut water ice-cubes, it becomes much smoother and way more tasty! If you strain yourself a bit though, you can perfectly drink it neat. With cola i didn't like it much, because its taste gets toned down quite a bit. Dominant wood and hints of smoke. Its every sip reeks of awesomeness and style! Allen, we miss you dearly!
This is a great sipping rum, especially if you're just starting out. Not as funky as other sippers in the same price range, but still delicious. A very round flavor profile that just envelopes your pallet. Goes down easy.
This was my first XO and wow was it worth it. Tempted to go 10 but not sure I can place it above Diplomatico which is my favourite to date. But this is smooth and sweet - amazing straight and I also enjoyed with a tiny squeeze of lime and ice
This is an excellent non-sweet rum with rich aromas suitable for whisky drinkers. The beginning of the nose offers a hint of cinnamon spice, reminds me of the Johnny Walker blue label. Easily one of my favorites.
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

The barrel aging comes through strong and its pretty darn dry so if you have a sugar tooth your not going to like this. This is a straight up neat in a tumbler whisky and rye drinkers rum. I like that it's bottled at 43% the extra heat makes for a warming session. This is perfect cool weather rum for occasions such as an evening spent on the beach.
I'm doing a side by side with the Brugal 1888 which has a higher grassy cane tone and maybe for that a justified 40% hence smoother quality but still I just think all rum should be bottled above 80 proof.
Both are top notch and side by side it's like Simon and Garfunkel but your not sure which one is Simon.
If you are exploring the world of Rum such as I and are coming from a single malt or bourbon background than this is a 100% sure bet must try at least once. It may not be your favorite but there is no way your going to be disappointed. For me I have placed a rather large 'YES' stamp on my file card.
I now know this is the goods.
