Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.
The aroma from the bottle made it seem this was going to be a sweet rum but it is drier than I expected. There is a bit of a molasses flavor initially but then the burn hits masking any sweetness. Those who prefer a drier rum will probably enjoy sipping this neat but it's definitely an excellent mixer for me.
Für mich ein toller Rum aus Barbados - sehr geschmacksvoll . Als Sipping Rum geeignet.
good rum, nothing bad but for me there is better than this in the same category
Color: reddish gold
Nose: Oh yes, there's so much going on here. Just for starters I'm getting maple syrup, burnt brown sugar, ripe persimmons, apples, vanilla, oak sap, sawdust. Adding a drop of water turns things creamier, cola and cream soda come through.
Thick oily legs slowly stroll down the sides of the glass.
Taste: similar to nose with strong baked apples, brown sugar, cola. Medium finish that's very good but the nose is the main attraction here. Well done!
aunque no es el 1706, este ron esta a su altura, esta alrededor de $30, pruébenlo y no se arrepentiran
Not too sweet, and it has complex tastes. One of the my best favorite rum in this price range.
One hell of a good rum and worth buying. IF you are looking for a rum that's not been played like adding extra sugar then go for this it has none.
Took a tour of the Mount Gay Distillery in Barbados and liked OX over the 1703. It was more appealing to my palate and at less than half the price....
This is nice, it is not a overly sweet rum a happy middle. You can drink this straight or with ice or a little lemon juice squeezed in. Mixing with normal mixers is a waste to the rum. If mixed with these drinks you will not appreciate the full flavour.
has a woody aroma with a dry finish.
Tried it on the rocks, next time I'll try it straight up.
Wonderful dryness, fruit and oak. Bottled at 43% and this gives that extra little punchiness to it. But the oak makes it so smooth. I find it easy to be a little dismissive of this due to the mass marketing of the brand.
This is somewhat dry with a woody, complex flavor. While it's a good sipper, it seems pricey for my taste. Update: this was based on a single sample at a rum tasting and I'm no longer rating rum until I've tasted it more thoroughly. I plan to update and revise this soon.
Chuť: Dřevitost, kořenitost, charakterem spíš do whisky než do rumu. Trochu v chuti zklamal.
Dochuť krátká, dřevitá. (82 b)
Shrnutí: Oproti Pampero je Gay rozhodně méně rumový, Pampero je sladší, vyzrálejší a lahodnější.
Za dochuť a celkový charakter se přikloňuji k nižší známce a zaokrouhluju směrem dolů.
Tastes great. Dry finish and full aroma. More a scotch than a rum.
If you ate lining for something different you found it.
Really like the taste and finish of this rum. I drink it over ice frequently.
Für mich der Rum für alle Tage. Pur. Sanft. Bem Preis - sensationell
Oodles of flavour! This is one of my favourite rums that doesn't break the bank. Way more flavour than regular Mount Gay Eclipse.
Good but did not have that special taste to give it a better ranking. Just not that great in my opinion.
First impressions are of butterscotch and leather. Then oaky and dry. The finish is oaky and spicy.
(Called XO here in Ontario, Canada)
Very good rum.
Warm, spicy and dry. Apart from the usual rum flavours, maybe a hint of grape but not that overly flavourful.
Well priced. I drink it neat however I don't mind mixing it for guests.
Good any way you want it. Neat, mixed, whatever. Reminds me of butterscotch lifesavers without the intense sweet.
I've bought this bottle so many times I've lost track. This is more of a consistent, accessible, versatile rum baseline for me. It's not your top shelf, but I'm yet to be disappointed by it. It's very smooth and on the sweeter side. It's a little pricey to be considered a mixer rum, but it's availability makes that guilt free.
Worth to try, it has its character and is nice with coke. Woody and kind of a sweet.
This is a nice rum with a bit strong punch. Works really well with a couple of drops of water. Quite dry.
