Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.
The aroma from the bottle made it seem this was going to be a sweet rum but it is drier than I expected. There is a bit of a molasses flavor initially but then the burn hits masking any sweetness. Those who prefer a drier rum will probably enjoy sipping this neat but it's definitely an excellent mixer for me.
This is a nice rum, but I'm at a loss to describe the taste in specifics. I can compare it to RL Seale's, but perhaps a little lighter tasting and with a slightly less smooth finish. I can't imagine too many people being disappointed with it. However, it's still not one I'd purchase again, unless there were no other/better choices.
I bought this because I enjoy Mount Gay black barrel and i thought this would be good too. It's a good sipper and a good mixer is well.
Wouldn't mix this. It reminds me of a scotch. I wouldn't even put ice in this.
This is just a touch smoother than the Mount Gay Black Barrel. It's also heavier ( fuller ) taste wise. I gave the Black Barrel a 7. This one gets an 8. I like it with pineapple juice or orange juice.
Little bit heavier. Not the best idea to drink too much from it. But on the other very smooth rum . loved it
Sugar: 2 gpl. This is a very smooth but dry rum. It's meant for sipping and not mixing, but you could mix it as it doesn't have any added sweetness. Nice taste of oak, caramel, butterscotch, and some aroma of leather or tobacco and of course the oak. I give this one an 8 and it's comparable with a high end Appleton. Some comparison to Flor de Cana as well. Can't wait to try the 1703.
Tres bon rhum , tres doux, boisé , un peu fumée, fruité sans etre trop sucré.
MGXO is the best I had so far. It has rich nose, the palette is something I've never experienced with another rum. I adore how it's fruity but not sweet, it's subtle and smooth. It has almost everything I find appealing on rum.
A little pricey compared to many other of my favorites in the 8, 9, 10 ranges. But not the most expensive and reasonable enough to keep in your rotation. Yum.
En god rom fra Barbados, men ikke så dog som jeg havde troet af en XO.
Egentlige dejlig smag med noter af tobak og ??
God lang eftersmag, men ikke på højde med andre XO'er.
Great bottle, mediocre an unremarkable rum. Looks impressive, but the quality taste just isn't present.
Since writing my first review on this I have upgraded it 1 point because I have come to appreciate that this simple and uncomplicated rum is an actual delight to serve neat or as a mixer. Either way it is pleasant, tasty without trying too hard.
its has a nice taste and deep balanced for a very good pricing
got to try some at the golf course. It was good good good. Smooth easy drinking.
A bit too much of a bite for me , i prefer it in a longer drink. Very flavoursome but the aftertaste is just a bit too much for my palette , good value though for a very decent and well made Barbados rum.
Great with just a single, large ice cube. Less sweet than most. Very good!
Dette er en hæderlig rom, men når man begynder at lære andre rom at kende. Så falder den her bare ud, den er kedelig og tilbyder intet.
A very good rum from the Barbados. I reaaly like the bottle also.
this is a very tasty melasse rum. Coffee and sweetnes in nose snd by drinking.
Having had the Mount Gay Eclipse multiple times I was quite intrigued to see if there was a noticeable difference in the step up to the XO. There is. Its not the smoothest rum I’ve tried but its easy to drink on its own and even better with a cube or two of ice.
I bought this rum because of the relatively good comments that I heard about it. After tasting it, I was unimpressed. I do not think I can describe its flavor with enthusiasm as is the case with other rums, but it was OK. It is on the side of the sweet rums, perhaps some caramel somewhere, some honey, but nothing really exciting. I mean it achieves a minimum standard set by rums of similar price in the sense that its quality is acceptable, but that is all.
Aroma: karamel, hout, alcohol.
Smaak: licht zoet. Alcohol op een goede manier aanwezig. Karamel en eikenhout.
Nasmaak: ietwat zoet, eindigt droog.
Prima rum van de oudste rum distillerij ter wereld.
