Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Interesting nose of oak with a faint hint of toasted pineapple and candied orange.
Quite dry with some fruity sweetness that seems to derive from.distillation and not from added sugar, very correct β for better or worse. Not a very long aftertaste. It is a bit like drinking a medium range, mainstream XO cognac: pleasant, good craftsmanship but nothing I will remember. But absolutely a worthy candidate if you want to stock a good XO rum at home. I much prefer this style to those with added sugar.
A really nice pure rum! I have also tried it with the advised Coconut water ice cubes, but the coconut is then tanking over. Just drink it straight on the rocks.
I bought this rum because of the relatively good comments that I heard about it. After tasting it, I was unimpressed. I do not think I can describe its flavor with enthusiasm as is the case with other rums, but it was OK. It is on the side of the sweet rums, perhaps some caramel somewhere, some honey, but nothing really exciting. I mean it achieves a minimum standard set by rums of similar price in the sense that its quality is acceptable, but that is all.
Had this in a bar one night before I got into drinking sprits neat. Served on the rocks with a twist of lime and a sugar rimmed glass, prefer it neat but was a nice change.
This is my first time trying Mount Gay. This is a nice rum for sipping.
Great one !! I was very much impressed by it ! Sweet yet dry. Spicy yet not too much !! Great one for 47$ CA. A little less burn than the el dorado 12 say !
Sadly, I have not found nothing special in this rum. Yes, it is a good one, but easy to forget.
Reasonably smooth and complex. Bought on sale, waiting for next sale.
good smooth rum better then Black Bartell version, for mΓ© little bit to dry, i prefer sweeter rums
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is an interesting rum. The smell is really wooden..the taste starts not too sweet. Then there is an alcoholburn which i don't mind, followed by a long wooden en peppery finish.
