Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Possibly the finest rum I've had at this price point. Gloriously smooth, brilliant on the nose, and excellent on the throat. Cant believe this is 7.8 rated, its far far beyond that
Wow! Quality in a bottle! Nose: cherry, vanilla and dark chocolate. Palate: not sweet at all, but what a round smooth taste of dark chocolate, pineapple and vanilla. Top notch!
Almost perfect on most levels, great neat or with single ice cube
I know hardly anything about rum I'm just giving it a rating so it shows up in my 'cabinet'. That said, it was very easy to drink. Seemed somehow less flavourful than the Diplomatico RE I had, but also smoother. After drinking this the Diplomatico seemed like it had much more of a burn.
it s a honest non sweetened rum, good neat or in a rum old fashioned !
let sit 10 minutes in the glass to lower the burn at nose, dry, complex nose (a lot of fruits, oak, brown sugar),
in the mouth is dry, warm but 43% ABV is ok, not too much,
it s a rum for whisky drinkers (me too), better than many 10-12 years old single malts i ve tried !
I drank this in Jamaica and have been dreaming about it since!
Treat yourself with a more complex and robust mount gay for those special occasions
Very very very good rum !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Stop! You're killing me...HA HAH ah (hack!) HAH!
That was for those rating this under a 7. This is a real rum. I suspect a tiny morsel of added sugars due to the "smoothness" - a dead give away for tossing sugar cubes into the batch for any rum less than 15 years old - but this an authentic rum, non-Western diabetic marketing concoction bordering on cough syrup.
Tasting notes are not needed. It's a better rum than Abuelo Centuria. MGXO has an almost perfect balance between of dry & sweet, wood and salivation, aged too long and not long enough. If you don't like this, head for the Zaya aisle. If you do, come on over and have a glass you discriminating, sophisticated, demanding drinker, you.
Rum crafting excellence.
