Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

I've tried lots of dark rum offerings over the years but this one is my absolute favorite. The experience is amazing from beginning to end. It looks great in the glass and the first sip is immediately loaded with burnt sugar and molasses. Spices and caramel follow and the swallow is out of this world without much burn or fire. An amazing rum! I do like to try other rums just for variety and adventure but I always have this one on the shelf for those days when I deserve a reward!
Un rhum vraiment très bon. Malgré ses 43° l'alcool ne se ressent pas beaucoup. Il reste quand même sec avec une finale boisée. Excellent !
If you don't have much to spend this is the rum you should try at least once
Excellent balance of fruit flavors. Rounded with a smooth finish. Leaves a nice taste in the mouth.
Almost perfect on most levels.
Enjoy!
I have seen this one on here a lot when searching for the white label Mount Gay XO(technically called “triple cask”) and figured it was not something I’d get the chance to try. Well when showing a friend that I had the never one, they mentioned that they had this one and he was willing to do a trade. This one is smoother(like everyone says) then the triple cask XO and has finish notes or dark red fruits, while staying true to its Barbados heritage and being an unmistakable Barbados terror and flavor
So the story goes like this - I was still pretty fresh rum sipper and I wanted to treat my self with something "better". At local discount my eyes crossed with something that looked very decent, not toi mention the "XO" sign which I thought was a guarantee of getting really nicely aged rum*. At first the taste was too strong and dry for me, but later I realised that Mount Gay XO is one of my favs!
No strong ethanol smell, amazing pure cane sugar scent, slightly dry, slightly tart in the mouth, but with a soft, pleasant finish. I drunk it solo, but I also added it to cocktails and with that kind of rum any drink was SUPERB.
Definitely it would be a must-have in my cabinet and I'm curious about other Mount Gay rums.
This is one of my favorites as it's fairly different from the ones that I usually drink. In my opinion, it's not even sweet, has a good woody aroma and has a bit of nice wamth when swallowing. Used to be my sipping rum for laid back evenings.
Stop! You're killing me...HA HAH ah (hack!) HAH!
That was for those rating this under a 7. This is a real rum. I suspect a tiny morsel of added sugars due to the "smoothness" - a dead give away for tossing sugar cubes into the batch for any rum less than 15 years old - but this an authentic rum, non-Western diabetic marketing concoction bordering on cough syrup.
Tasting notes are not needed. It's a better rum than Abuelo Centuria. MGXO has an almost perfect balance between of dry & sweet, wood and salivation, aged too long and not long enough. If you don't like this, head for the Zaya aisle. If you do, come on over and have a glass you discriminating, sophisticated, demanding drinker, you.
Rum crafting excellence.

It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Perfect score for this XO. All around smooth, well balanced spices, oaky finish to it. Not too sweet. High class rum at an affordable price ! Cheers
