Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

This is one of the best quality/price rums out there. Very fine and well balanced, no added sugar, no bullshit. Great as sipper or mixed.
Good any way you want it. Neat, mixed, whatever. Reminds me of butterscotch lifesavers without the intense sweet.
As the title says, this is my first sipping rum. I've only had rum in mixed drinks and decided that it's time for me to grow up and have some big boy drinks. Hehe. I decided to start with this one since it is often seen as a standard for tasting rum.
Overall I'm happy with my decision.
I smell fruit and spice. It's a little sweet smelling. I don't get the banana that others report, but that's good since I hate banana.
On my tongue, I get some spiciness, mainly pepper. I also detect some fruit, but my palate isn't refined enough yet to narrow it down.
I'll be judging all future rums against this one.
Nice dark golden color. Smooth on the tongue. Not that burn some rums have. Not too sweet. I added a small piece of ice and let it sit a few minutes. Truly a good rum and should be on your shelf.
First time I had this I drunk it straight. Very nice. Best one in my cabinet so far, I am most drawn to spiced rums and I really enjoyed this one.
It took me a few years to truly appreciate this rum. It really does measure up incredibly well, and it’s a great rum to give to whisky drinkers who can really appreciate it. I used to drink it with an ice cube but now tend to go for just a drop of water.
As smooth as many rums with a much larger price tag, this is one you should most definitely try.
It retails between £35 and £40, but the experience is not too far away from the one you get with the 1703 Master Select.
There is a little more alcohol burn than its older brother, but aside from that, it is very similar.
With excellent balance and a length of finish comparable to the Master Select, this is a real bargain.
My bottle is gone, so I can't describe the flavour notes for you in as much detail as I would like. Just know that This is the best rum you can buy in this price bracket, and that is why my rating is so high.
Tak toto je rum, zatiaľ najlepšie čo som pil, málo cukru, až vôbec, nie je to žiadny likér.
Ill state up front that I like to mix with Coke. This really delivers with the cola. Before the cola goes in there is a nose of molasses and slightly burnt sugar. Once in the glass I get the typical oak/vanilla that you get with the Mount Gay rums. There is a faint acidity that possibly takes this away from being a true gem but for the price this is top notch. Not dissimilar to Penny Blue which is a little lighter and less acidic
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Nice aroma with vanilla, wood and spicy.
Smooth taste more on dry side. Lighter body, but enjoyable. Longer aftertaste with oak tones. This one won't be love on first taste, but more experienced drinkers will enjoy the real taste not covered by added sugar or spicy.
