Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

The nose is not complex. I get dry fruits, vanilla and some caramel with white oak.
The nose is not very intensive and spicy.
The taste is simple and a little bit sweet. I get vanilla, white oak, some sweetness and the spice.
Good rum for mixing, but too simple and spicy. If you like spicy rums, you could also try to sip it.
I would go for black barrel, it's also spicy but more complex.

A good basic rum with a lot of spice notes from the heavy char whiskey barrels that they use. Unfortunately, it doesn't play well with other ingredients, but one of the best lightly aged rums for a Barbados rum punch. Basically needs bitters to make it shine in cocktails. On it's own, it's fine, but I'll reach for other rums before this one for neat pours or basic cocktails.
I want to rate this at a 6.5/10. Itβs definitely good but lacking a bit. For a sipper itβs not anything Iβd drink on a regular basis. As a mixed drink itβs pretty good. If youβre one that likes to taste your rums: the nose is a bit harsh but mellows out to sweet aromas of spice and sweetness. You get notes of spice and oak on the tongue along with a bit of alcohol burn. Itβs a solid rum for your budget which definitely makes it more attractive.
Not much to this one. Light and gentle but nothing special.
Its enjoyable neat or with a mixer, but not a stand out.
This might not be my first choice for a sipping rum, yet it's perfectly fine on the rocks. It works well in a variety of cocktails too. There's vanilla, banana, a bit of oak, and a general "rumminess" but nothing jumps out at you. Bonus points for being an honest, unadulterated rum.
This will due in a pinch for on the rocks imbibing. Not something i would let my friends drink unless as a mixer with juice or cola.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. Itβs just very heavy on the alcohol. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Drank this when learning to sail. Mount Gay is why I fell in love with rum.
