Montanya Platino Light rum

Montanya Platino Light

United States | Light | 40% ABV

Montanya Platino rum, a direct fire pot-distilled, unrefined raw crystalized cane- and molasses-based rum that spends one year in American white oak barrels that previously held both Colorado whiskey and Montanya’s Oro Rum (molasses makes up 12% of the fermentation). A tiny amount of caramelized Colorado wildflower honey is added and the rum’s color is removed with a coconut husk filter before it’s bottled at 80 proof.

Not sure why it's listed as "light" on this site...it's called Platino.

Anyway, great white rum. Tastes like oak and cream soda. Smells great, finishes great. Has a little bite. Perfect white rum.

This is a fire aged barrel rum which means the pot is directly heated from flame . What this does to the rum is give it a slight spice but being a white rum that's just barrel flavoured I find this one rather bland .

I bought this rum to replace my regular lightly aged pot still rum, Privateer Amber, which has become hard to find. When I get a new rum I always taste it neat, then make a daiquiri so that I can characterize the taste and how it will perform in a cocktail. With this rum I didn't get past step one. This stuff is really raw -- my wife likened it to kerosene, and flatly refused to drink a daiquiri made using it.

It's in a different shaped bottle and has a different label than what's pictured here -- maybe it's not the same rum as the one that got good reviews below. I cannot imagine that the folks who are promoting this rum as a sipper are tasting the same dreck that is in my bottle...

Gotta say it's pretty sweet when I can support a local small distillery. First had this in a daquiri and loved it. This is now my go to for mojitos, daquiris and other drinks needing a good pot distilled white.

Better than Bacardi White 🙂. Pleasant sugary nose, like Brown sugar or caramel. Not sweet tasting, slight burn at the neck of the mouth.
We used it for mojitos though, and it worked very well.

I have never met a white Rum I would sip until this one. It sips more like an aged rum but works in strong cocktails like a daiquiri more like a light rum. I will never make a daiquiri with anything else. Crisp, light, smooth, with a great but subtle vanilla finish. I am a fan of this company’s sustainability work too. I care about cane workers and good environmental practices. I hear they take good care of their employees too because I met one (not an owner) at a tasting event once.

I typically only like dark rums but this one is awesome and local to crested butte Colorado

I really don't find much flavor in crystal rums. Would be fine for mixed drinks. Didn't have any of the off flavors I've found in similar rums.

Aroma: soft, sweet I get vanilla, perhaps a bit of almost licorice. This is an aged rum (in Oak barrels) so I do get just a hint of almost floral in nature. Crisper than I'd expect, let's taste.
The sweetness happens first, then a very crisp transformation to an almost peppery end. At 80 proof , it has just a pleasing bite up-front. The sweetness tends to stay on the tongue and the edges finish with a dry, clean taste. The aftertaste is slight - I find drier. Very nice indeed. While a great mixer - this Plantino is just a much at home in any glass with a splash, a rock and some time.
